40 alleged drunken Santas accused of running amok

Monday, December 19, 2005File:Santarchy new zealand.jpg

The conduct by a group of ‘Santas’ making an unclear statement last Saturday is not appreciated in the business district of Auckland, New Zealand. The event, organized in the discussion forum of an online skateboard magazine, caused big media publicity.

Alex Dyer, spokesman for the group, stated that Santarchy in Auckland is part of a worldwide phenomenon. It is disputed if Santarchy is a protest against the commercialization of Christmas or not.

Auckland Central Police spokesperson Noreen Hegarty said to the press that the rampage began in the early part of the afternoon when men wearing ill-fitting Santa costumes threw beer bottles and urinated on cars from an overpass, then rushed through a central city park, overturning garbage bins, throwing bottles at passing cars and spraying graffiti on office buildings.

“They came in, said ‘Merry Christmas’ and then helped themselves,” said a convenience store staff member Changa Manakynda, according to local newspapers.

One writer using the pseudonym ‘Le_SigNagE’ on the Santarchy! (or also known as the Santacon) website commented, “… after all, this is what Christmas is really about… mindless vandalism and petty theft.”

Another writer who posted under the pseudonym Santy Claus said of the media coverage,”There was some major misreporting and Chinese whispers. Breaking bottles and urinating under a bridge, became throwing rocks at buses and urinating on cars from an overpass. The ‘organisers’ as they were, saw little in the way of crime other than one santa attempting to board a foreign vessel by scaling 20 metres along a rope 60 feet in the air. The difficulty and motor skills involved in this task alone should be a defense in itself of being ‘drunk’ and ‘disorderly’.”

Due to Santa’s reputation for integrity and his strict media policy, his sparse communication is mostly one-way: receiving lists from children with wishes for Christmas. It is difficult to get his comment about New Zealands skateboard interested ‘Santas’.

In 1994, the Cacophony Society staged the world’s very first SantaCon in San Francisco. Influenced by the surrealist movement Discordianism, and other subversive art currents.

How To Reenergize A Stale Brand

By Stephen Turner

Many smart business owners have an aggressive and thorough “branding” strategy.

They communicate regularly with customers, work on product and service messaging and development, and re-do their website, sales material, blogs, social media and marketing pieces on a regular basis.

Still many companies overlook the entire concept of branding. While they may re-do a website, or change their brochure, they fail to grasp the concept that their brand is an entire customer experience, not just a logo or newly designed ad in a magazine.

The “brand” is the entire process of how a business works with a client, from original attraction, to product/service development and placement, to ongoing follow-up and customer relations.

The real branding process begins not by creating a new sales piece but by analyzing your business practices and client relationships.

Do your customers believe they are getting fair value for what you offer?

If your products seem to be out of touch with the marketplace you need to determine what can you do to change them.

Can you improve packaging, service delivery or the product itself? Is price an issue? Can you deliver on what you promise?

Once you have fulfilled your customer promise, you then can take a good look at your marketing materials. Is your logo modern looking and attractive or look like something out of the 1950s?

Does your website provide key information your customers need in a fast easy-to-read manner?

Can customers find your website easily when they do an online search? If you use brochures make sure they look clean and professional with current information.

Thirdly, analyze how you sell your goods and services.

If you use a sales staff do they represent your firm in a professional manner? Do they dress appropriately and show-up for appointments on time? Do you they receive constant training and management support or are they allowed to just flounder along?

Your salesperson will be the first contact your prospective customer will have with your company and immediately he/she will form an opinion whether it be good or bad.

Fourth, do some research and ascertain how the general business community perceives your company.

If sales are weak and you’ve done no advertising or public relations in quite some time most businesses probably have no opinion about your company.

In fact in all likelihood most have never heard of it.

To restart your brand invest in advertising and a public relations campaign. Develop a plan that reaches your target audience. Some tactics may include joining boards of organizations, sponsoring events, securing articles in various publications, and communicating with your audience via online news sites and social groups.

Fifth, follow-up with customers and make sure they are happy with product and service delivery. In today’s fast-paced environment receiving a call or email inquiring about customer satisfaction can separate your firm from the rest of the pack.

In a small company that call or email can come from top management. In a larger company it may come from the head of customer service or customer service rep.

The ability to sell and market a good product in a professional manner, follow-through with excellent customer service, and give-back to your community by playing an active role in groups and charitable organizations, is the best way to enhance your brand or reenergize a stale one.

International participants showcase different industry cultures at 2008 Taipei Game Show

Friday, January 25, 2008

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.

Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

In the 2-days Digital Content Forum, world-class experts not only shared industry experiences, members from Taiwan Gaming Industry Association also discussed and forecasted marketing models for gaming industry. With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

Iranian Navy conducts drills in Strait of Hormuz

Monday, December 31, 2012

The Islamic Republic of Iran says it is conducting naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Iranian navy’s Habibollah Sayyari, the “Velayat 91” drills — to be held for a six day period ending on Wednesday — are intended to showcase “the armed forces’ military capabilities.”

Iran’s state-run media reports that the Iranian government warns all ships to stay away until the end of the exercises. According to this report the drills — which began on Friday — are to be conducted over roughly half a million square miles (a million square kilometers) of waters stretching from the Strait of Hormuz to the northern part of the Indian Ocean which includes the Gulf of Oman.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major shipping route of great strategic importance. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 17 million barrels of oil passes through this part of the Persian Gulf per day. That is nearly 20% of the worldwide oil trade and about 35% of oil transported by sea.

This is only one in a series of major naval drills held by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. Ten days of drills, “Velayat 90”, was conducted last December and “Velayat 89” a year and a half before that in May 2010. Four months ago, the United States with some of its allies also conducted a series of exercises and naval drills, concerned with keeping the strait open. Iran has said it might close the strait if its nuclear program were attacked.

President Alvaro Colom says torrential downpours causing flooding and landslides have undone the country’s reconstruction from Tropical Storm Agatha in May. Up to eighteen people are reported killed in rain-related incidents across the country as weather systems in both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific batter the region, and forecasters expect another 48 hours of precipitation. At least ten people were killed, 20 rescued, when a landslide buried a bus as it traveled on the Inter-American highway in the worst single-incident.

The Arizona Cardinals US football team has released Heisman trophy-winner Matt Leinart after being unable to find a favorable trade. Leinart had been unable to break out of the back-up quarterback role with the team after early injuries kept him on the sideline for a couple years, and expressed his frustration publicly on Monday. The Cardinals, forced to trim their team roster to 53 players, cut Leinart leaving him without a team.

Police spokesperson Ros Wetherall reported officers attempted to stop the Holden Commodore around 1 a.m. local time (5 p.m. UTC), but had to search for the vehicle which they found crashed into the home on Grovelands Drive, Camillo. Making A Choice Of Home Theatre Systems

byphineasgray

In most scenarios, you decide to upgrade your television to one of the newer wide screen models. However, after a couple of months with it you find that the sound is not as satisfactory as the visual experience you have when you are watching your movies, DVDs or simply playing a video game. Thus comes the need to look at Home Theater Systems that will complement your entertainment experience. So how does one go about selecting home theater systems that would be right for their needs? Here are several things that you could consider when you go out shopping for this system.

The first thing that you need to establish is the type of surround sound that you want for your home or Car Audio. You could opt for three general types. The first is the 5.1 system. This is considered the best when it comes to entertainment purists. The sound is excellent. In addition to this, it also comes with a dedicated sub-woofer. However, this system tends to be quite bulky and thus will take up more space than you surround sound. This system comes with two side speakers as well a sub-woofer. It mainly relies on software to give you the illusion of great sound. This is a great option for people who want great sound but also want to save on space, as the system is not bulky. The last option to contemplate would be a sound bar. This unit is quite compact and largely relies on software for effective sound effects.

The next thing that you would have to consider when it comes to picking out home theater systems would be the power. The best method of establishing how powerful you would want the unit to be would be by analyzing the room that it is going to be used. The bigger the space available, the more powerful a surround sound system you would need.

Before you purchase one of these systems, you have to take a good look at the connectors that come with it. Visit the store The Stereoshop Inc.

West Midlands Law Firm Takes A Healthy Approach With Screening From The Healthy Hearts Institute

By John Mehtam

Employment Law Solicitors, Martin Kaye are the first company in Telford to use the Healthy Hearts Campaign’s new mobile health screening facility in a bid to assist employees in monitoring their health. Diabetes and cardio-vascular risks can now be identified with a 30 minute pop-in pop-out check at work.

A West Midlands law firm is the first company in Telford to take part in a health screening campaign for its staff.

The screening will include cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar analysis, as well as a general physical examination, a lung function test, and heart checks.

‘The Healthy Hearts Institute is based at Sandwell Medical Research Unit at West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, and has already been piloted across the West Midlands.

Healthy Hearts Campaign Co-ordinator, Geraldine Thomas, said: ‘Our mobile screening facility travels between industrial estates, business parks, and office blocks, and is run by a team of health professionals.

‘Hundreds of staff have benefited from the state-of-the-art check-ups, and now the screening programme is being extended to Shropshire.

Martin-Kaye Solicitors, who are based in Telford, have signed up to the Healthy Hearts Campaign, in a bid to help employees find out more about the state of their health.

The mobile screening unit will visit the company’s offices on November 15, and every employee who attends the session will receive a 30-minute consultation to assess their condition, with the results explained in private afterwards.

Senior Partner, Graham Davies, said: ‘We are extremely pleased that our staff are backing the Healthy Hearts initiative, and that they’re keen to take up this opportunity – in fact over 70 per cent of our employees have signed up to take part.

‘At the heart of every company is its workforce and we want to help our employees to identify any potential risks so they can seek the right kind of treatment, which should help prevent problems in the future.’

Healthy Hearts, Geraldine Thomas, said: ‘We are delighted to see such a high level of interest from a wide range of companies, who are all taking the view that health screening in the workplace benefits not only the employee, but the company too.’

Healthy Hearts is a charitable social enterprise initiative which encourages access to health screening, particularly with regard to cardio-vascular health risks and diabetes. Although operating for some three years, Healthy Heart was established as a charitable institute in 2006 to improve access to health in local communities, and forms part of the Sandwell Primary Prevention Alliance.

Getting even with the law: Wikinews interviews New York City’s ‘Jimmy Justice’

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

“What bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle.

A civilian known as ‘Jimmy Justice’ who resides in New York City (NYC), New York, the largest city in the United States, has been videotaping NYC police officers and city workers, breaking the law while on the job.

Since 2007, he claims to have caught “hundreds of officers and other city employees violating the law,” and says he has them all on camera. He has posted his best confrontations with them to the video sharing website YouTube. As a result, Justice states that he has been asked to do a United States television show and Wikinews got an exclusive interview with him. For protection, Justice wished not to be called by his real name in fear of police retaliation.

Last year, Justice videotaped a police officer parking in front of a fire hydrant, but has only recently gained attention on social networking news sites such as Digg and reddit.com. So Wikinews contacted Mr. Justice, known as JimmyJustice4753 on YouTube, for an exclusive interview to find out what caused him to get revenge on the law.

On June 30, 2007, Justice caught officer E. Anderson of the NYPD, traffic division, parking directly in front of a fire hydrant while she went inside a restaurant to take a 15 minute lunch break.

“Do you think there is something wrong with parking a vehicle, blocking a fire hydrant,?” says Justice while following Anderson to her car after her meal.

“Mrs. Anderson I’m talking to you,” says Justice as Anderson ignores him. “You parked your vehicle blocking a fire hydrant. You are not allowed to do that. Somebody else would get a ticket for that. Why are you allowed to do it? You should be ashamed of yourself Mrs. Anderson.”

By this time, the incident has gained the interest of people nearby the scene and passing it. One unidentified woman, who claims to be a retired NYC police officer decides to intervene stating that people “are not supposed to film any police, [or] anybody employed with the police department because of the terrorism.” A short time later the woman walked off camera.

Since 2007 Justice says he has caught “hundreds of law enforcement officers and city officials” on “over 30 hours of video” violating laws from illegal U-turns in business districts to blocking bus stops and fire hydrants. Justice has only uploaded the “most colorful ones to YouTube” and recently, on April 8, 2008, Justice videotaped a NYPD tow truck officer blocking a hydrant while he also ate lunch inside a restaurant. According to NYC law, it is illegal for any vehicle to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant and to park in front of a bus stop. It is also illegal for any person to make a U-turn in a business district. Fines for these violations can cost a driver up to US$115.00 for each violation occurred.

When Wikinews asked Justice why he decided to start filming the violations made by officials he answered, “what bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle. I started making these videos to remind the officers (and complacent civilians) that City employees have to abide by the same laws that they are paid to enforce. I plan on doing this and inspiring others to do this as well as a means of leveling the playing field against discourteous officers.”

“In NYC, the traffic cops are notorious for their draconian indiscretion in handing out summonses to civilians for petty violations. Obviously the laws are not enforced as a matter of public safety, but rather to raise revenue,” added Justice.

Justice makes little effort to get the violations on videotape saying “all I have to do to catch them is open my eyes.”

“The problem with abuse of authority is rampant in New York City. I take my video camera with me on the way to work and on the way to social events and band rehearsals and when I see action it takes me less than 4 seconds to have the camera out and in record mode,” states Justice.

His videos have drawn the attention of media and he has been featured on ABC’s ‘I-caught videos’ and Inside Edition. Justice also states that the popularity of his videos have gotten the attention producers in Hollywood, California and as a result, there are plans for a television show.

Since Justice began getting even with officials and their violations, he states that there has been a positive change in the communities.

“The publicity my videos have received has effected positive change in the community, but we still have a long road ahead of us,” added Justice.

As a result of his videos, at the time the NYPD launched an investigation into the violations, but it is not known if any officers were charged or punished. Justice himself has never been arrested, but has been assaulted.

“I have never been arrested for this yet but they have threatened me with arrest. I have been spit on, cursed at, assaulted, and I had 2 cameras broken already,” added Justice.
