North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inaugurates the “Defence Development Exhibition ‘Self-Defence-2021′”

Wednesday, October 13, 2021

As reported by Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inaugurated a new weapons exhibition in Northern Pyongyang, on the occasion of the ruling Party’s 76th founding anniversary. This exhibition is located in the Three-Revolutions Exhibition House, a museum built under the command of former leader Kim Jong Il.

A ceremony took place outside the exhibition house for the arrival of Kim Jong Un. The leader was greeted by cries of “Manse!” (Long Live, or Hurrah!) from the crowd, which were mainly military officers, party officials and “merited officials, scientists and technicians in the national defence industrial field.” Present at the ceremony were high-ranking party officials Choe Ryong Hae, Jo Yong Won and Hyon Song Wol. North Korean premier Kim Tok Hun was also present, alongside Marshal Pak Jong Chon. Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong could also be spotted in the crowd of officers.

The military band of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) and members of the Orchestra of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK proceeded with a short musical display, playing songs about the Workers’ Party. After the musical show, servicepersons of the KPA proceeded with a martial arts display, with some featured acts consisting of breaking bricks and tiles with bare fists, bending steel bars with the sternum and jumping over cars. A squadron of fighter pilots flew over the exhibition grounds, with coloured smoke being released from the jets to display the colours of the North Korean flag.

The ceremony was followed by a speech from Kim Jong Un inside the exhibition. In his speech, Kim said that “the US tacit sponsorship continue to damage the inter-Korean feelings and emotions” and that “South Korea has been unhesitant on several occasions in disclosing its ambition for securing military supremacy over us under the preposterous excuse of deterring threat from us”.

Kim Jong Un also called for the North Korean nation to be “powerful also for our coming generations”, citing this objective as the nation’s “first and foremost task”. He followed by calling upon the people to devote themselves to the defence abilities of the country.

After his speech, Kim Jong Un awarded servicepersons and other people with high decorations, including the Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il Orders, the Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il Prizes, the title of Labour Hero, the Order of the National Flag and watches signed with the named of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Un then toured the exhibition, where countless missiles were displayed, including editions 14, 15 and 16 of the Hwasong ICBM series.

After touring the exhibition, Kim Jong Un met the fighter jet pilots who flew over the exhibition and left in a limousine.

Finland, Canada named among world’s most-fit nations

Saturday, January 15, 2005

Finland and Canada — The Northern European country of Finland was named among the world’s most healthy, according to an investigation by the London-based newspaper, The Guardian. According to health experts, Finland joins Canada as having the distinction of being home to the lowest percentage of “couch potato” citizens among developed nations.

Pekka Puska, Director of Finland’s National Institute of Public Health claimed that in the 1970s, the country held the world record for heart disease. “Finnish men used to say that vegetables were for rabbits and not for men,” he said, “and the staple foods were bread and butter, fatty meat and full-fat milk!”

When the Finnish government found out the figures in the 1970s, it began a campaign to make a healthier nation. The number of males dying of heart problems has, over the past 35 years, decreased by 65 percent, and lung cancer deaths have also dropped dramatically.

Other nations are now considering using similar tactics as the Finnish government to make their own countries more healthy, but some say it is yet another example of a “nanny state.”

Peace tax campaigners turned down by UK judge

Friday, July 22, 2005

The Peace Tax Seven, who are campaigning to have the 10 per cent of their taxes which go to Britain’s defence budget diverted to non-military uses, have had their case rejected by a High Court judge.

The judicial review was called for under article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights which guarantees freedom ‘to manifest one’s religion or beliefs’ and which was made a part of British law in 1998. The Convention includes the right to conscientious objection and the campaigners claim that this gives them the right not to pay other people to go to war on their behalf.

Their statement to the court said: “We want to make a positive contribution to society by paying our tax in full. We object in conscience to paying others to kill on our behalf, but current tax policy forces us to do just that.”

The courtroom had to be enlarged to make room for supporters and the judge listened to the case for three hours.

Roy Prockter, an accountant and campaign member as well as a Quaker, said that the judge told them that “our case has no possibility of being resolved in the British courts”. According to the Guardian, the judge suggested they take the case to Strasbourg. Roy said that the members were going to take time for reflection as they awaited the written judgment from the judge.

Payday Loans: Solution For Unplanned Expenses

By Helen Sharma

There are people who are planners and there are those live their lives one day at a time. The former are those who know exactly what they will be doing a week or a month, or even a year, from the present. They have laid out their goals and how they are going to achieve them. The latter are those who are dubbed happy-go-lucky and laidback. They do not worry much about what they will be doing the next day or week, or month and instead tend to cross whatever bridge when they get there.

Clearly, there are marked differences between these two types of people. However, life does not always make that distinction. There are times in each person’s life that unexpected things occur. And when they do, it does not matter much whether you are a planner or not. When life gives you a soccer punch, there is nothing you can do but tide it out.

More often than not, unexpected events entail unexpected expenses as well. What do you do when this happens? Where do you get that extra infusion of cash that you desperately need?

One very feasible option is to take out a payday loan. A payday loan is a short term loan that gives the borrowers a lot of benefits. More often than not, UK residents can take out a payday loan through online loan providers. There is no shortage of online payday loan providers all throughout the UK today.

Operating online means several things. One, the loan processing – from application to releasing of the cash – takes much less time than traditional loans. Different loan providers have different processing times but on the average, you can get your cash from a payday loan within a day or two of approval. Approval can take as short as less than a day. Two, operating online allows payday loan providers to charge less than they would have to if they were operating in the traditional brick and mortar establishment. This is due to the lower operating expenses and overhead costs.

Requirements for a payday loan differ from lender to lender but in general, one has to be at least 18 years of age and a UK resident to be qualified for a payday loan. In addition to these things, one must be able to prove that he has a stable job or source of income. This is usually in the form of a pay stub. An active bank account with a direct debit facility is also needed in order to transfer the cash quickly and make payments as well.

Aside from these basic things, there is usually nothing more asked of a prospective borrower for a payday loan. If you are a returning borrower, the requirements even become less, making it easier for you to take out a payday loan when you need it the most.

As with all other types of loans in the market, you have to bear in mind that payday loans come at a price. You have to pay a payday loan off at the specified time; otherwise you shall pay additional fees. As such, you must borrow wisely and borrow only what you can afford.

Media round-up: April Fools’ Day 2008

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Many media outlets traditionally deliberately spread hoaxes on April Fools’ Day, including notable quality sources such as National Geographic and Science.

The popular British tabloid The Sun wrote that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo stretch surgery to make him taller than his wife, Italian artist and model Carla Bruni. The report claimed the 5 foot 5 inch leader would be made 5 inches taller in one year using a method by Israeli professor Ura Schmuck. The Sun noted that during his visit to Britain last week, Sarkozy had high-heel shoes while his wife wore a pair of flat pumps.

The Guardian on the other hand ran an article that suggested that Carla would head an initiative by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring more glamour, good taste and sophistication to the U.K. general population. This would involve collaboration with Marks & Spencer for high-street fashion and Jamie Oliver for meals and wine.

BBC News had real-looking footage of flying penguins fronted by documentary host Terry Jones, which were actually an advertisement for its new iPlayer.

Aquarium Plants In The Home Aquarium

By Devin Gilliland

Adding live plants to an aquarium does more than just improve aesthetics – plants provide shelter, food for vegetarian fish, and prevent green water. Plants also soak up carbon dioxide, waste products, contribute oxygen to the water, and promote the growth of algae, tiny worms, rotifers, and protozoa, providing live food for the fish.

Lighting is important if you want your plants to grow successfully. They need 12-14 hours of light each day, just like in nature. Opinions vary concerning how much light live plants need, but generally 3-5 watts per gallon works well. Compact fluorescent bulbs and par 20, 50-watt halogen bulbs both do the job right, so experiment with different types of lighting to find out what works best for your plants.

Plants also require the proper nutrients to stay healthy and green. Everything works together in a well-planned aquarium, so keeping the plants fed isn’t a difficult prospect. Nutrients to feed the plants come from the fish in the tank – you can add more if needed. Fertilization is easy as well because plants are able to naturally use fish waste as fertilizer. You can add a commercial fertilizer when you change the water, but it’s usually better to follow the ‘less is more’ philosophy when it comes to fertilizing your plants. Too much fertilizer can cause problems with algae growth in the tank, and you can always add more if required.

What about water temperature? The majority of aquatic plants thrive in water temperatures between 72f and 78f. The pH of the water is also important – a pH of 6.8 to 7.8 is ideal.

Snails are another natural component that help the overall health of the aquatic environment. Snails clean plants of food and small algae, as they crawl over leaves and foliage. However, some snails can actually cause problems. Ramshorn, pond, and other species eat the leaves instead of clean them, and can cause unwanted damage. Luckily, it’s quite easy to remove troublesome snails. Simply place lettuce leaves at the top of the aquarium to attract the snails – remove everything with a net once all the snails have assembled on the lettuce pieces.

Before placing new plants in your aquarium, rinse them thoroughly in warm water to remove any insects you don’t want invading the aquarium. Healthy plants have solid roots and firm leaves, so this is what you should look for when purchasing aquatic plants. Avoid plants that give off a strange smell, especially bulbs, as this is an indication that the plant is not healthy and may not grow properly once placed in your tank.

Younger plants generally adjust better to transplantation, so keep this in mind as well. Although the plants you buy will need a period of time to adjust, and may lose some leaves, don’t be alarmed. This is completely normal. To promote healthy new growth, just remove dead leaves as they appear, being careful not to damage the roots.

Aquatic plants make a beautiful addition to any aquarium and help keep the fish comfortable, healthy, and happy.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Setting Up A New Site: What Basic Office Supplies In Madison, Wi Are Needed Right Now?

byAlma Abell

Opening an office after running a new business out of a back bedroom is a heady experience. Along with thinking about details like computer equipment and furnishings, it pays to think about what type of basic Office Supplies in Madison WI will be needed immediately. While some things can wait until everyone is settled in, others must be in place for the office to function. Here are some examples to keep in mind.

Copy Paper

Even with the use of file sharing, email, and other electronic means of communication, there is still the need to print some things out for meetings or to prepare paper copies of invoices. Always make sure copy paper is on that list of basic Office Supplies in Madison WI and ensure there is plenty before the office officially opens. Doing so ensures the employees can get right to work without having to wait for the paper to be delivered.

Printer Cartridges

Cartridges for every printer in the office must be in place. Fresh cartridges should be in those printers, and the supply closet should sport at least one compatible cartridge for each of those devices. If the office functioned with the use of one central printer, it wouldn’t hurt to hold two in reserve.

Note Pads

The ability to quickly write out a note that can be passed down the conference room table during an audio conference or to take a message from a caller who despises voice mail is always helpful. That means having something to write on when those occasions arise. Good, old-fashioned note pads do the job.

Pens and Pencils

Jotting down notes during a phone conversation is still one of the more common tasks associated with office work. Jotting is a lot easier if there is a pen or pencil handy to go with those note pads. Pay close attention to the quality and spend a little more up front. The last thing anyone needs is a pen that won’t write or a pencil lead that breaks every time someone tries to use it.

The expense of opening a new office is significant. Learn more about us and how to prioritize the selection of supplies. Once the office is up and running, there will be time to think about purchasing other supplies that are needed less frequently.

Afghan president Hamid Karzai opens new terminal at Kabul International Airport

Friday, November 7, 2008

Hamid Karzai, president of Afghanistan, has opened a new terminal at Kabul International Airport. The US$35m (£22m) two-story structure was gifted by Japan as the old terminal building had become badly damaged by decades of war.

Speaking at the event, attended by 150 Afghan and Japanese officials, Karzai expressed his gratitude for the building, saying “Afghanistan could not have made this terminal on its own for many years or without lots of effort.” The new terminal is built next to the original sixties building, which had been considered luxurious when new but has fallen into decline, especially after the 1979 Soviet invasion and the civil war which followed.

Increasing numbers of military aircraft joined the commercial passenger planes, making Kabul International a frequent target of rocket attacks. It was in a poor state of repair, as well as outdated and in need of expansion, by the time the Taliban were ousted from Afghanistan.

Karzai implored his people to take proper care of the new terminal, which Afghan officials described as a step along the route to reconstruction after the Taliban were deposed.

“I hope, now this facility has been handed over to us, that our sisters and brothers, those in charge of the airport, the passengers passing through, the state officials and MPs using it, will look after it and they should not allow, God forbid, that we come here after a year and find its windows, doors and tiles broken,” he said.

The building will enter service next week, in time to carry passengers to Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage of the Hajj. It has a capacity of one million passengers every year, and will service both domestic and international routes.
