A compilation of brief news reports for Thursday, August 13, 2009.

The French capital Paris has seen a second night of violence by demonstrators, who have blamed police for the death of a motorcyclist on Sunday.

On Sunday night youths in the eastern suburb of Bagnolet, set 29 vehicles alight and threw stones and petrol bombs at police. Monday night was “relatively calm” according to Samira Amrouche, spokeswoman for the regional administration, the authorities having depolyed 40 vans of riot police only 8 vehicles were burnt.

The motorcyclist, a pizza deliveryman, was killed when he fled police attempting to examine his documents, dying when he was struck by a pursuing police vehicle according to the youths, however in the police version his death was a result of him crashing into barriers.

The current violence has echoes of the unrest in 2005, with again dissaffected youths of Arab and black descent venting their anger and frustration.

The leaders of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) met in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday and Monday. The leaders of the three countries (Barack Obama of the United States, Felipe Calderón of Mexico, and Stephen Harper of Canada) promised to work together on swine flu, organised crime and green issues.

Despite disputes in a number of areas remaining unresolved, the three leaders succeeded in presenting an amiable Three Amigos image. The three leaders expressed solidarity, and an understanding of each others position.

The unresolved issues include the buy American clauses in the US stimulus package, tit for tat reprisals by the Mexican authorities over Canadian visa restrictions on Mexican travellers, and the US ban on Mexican trucks from crossing the border.

Risking the ire of human rights activists back home President Obama expressed support for President Calderón’s war against drugs saying he had “great confidence” in the Mexican authorities.

Mexican Federal Police (Policía Federal) have foiled an alleged plot to assasinate the President of Mexico Felipe Calderón. Acting on intelligence gathered over a year the Federal Police arrested five drug cartel members on Sunday and publicly paraded their captives and a number of weapons ,including automatic rifles, on Monday. Speaking during a summit of North American leaders Calderón played down the threats on his life, saying that the cartels are being destroyed by his policies.

Some 11000 have died since President Calderón’s took office in 2006 and made the war on drugs a cornerstone of his administration.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced by a court in Burma to a further three years of house arrest for violating the terms of her previous sentence. However her sentence was immediately commuted to 18 months on the orders of Burmese head of state Senior-General Than Shwe out of respect for her father General Aung San and out of a desire for “national reconciliation”.

The period of her arrest will prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from participating in the general elections scheduled for 2010. The sentence was immediately condemned by Western leaders, and breaking from their usual silence, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) through its current chair Thailand issued a statement expressing disappointment. The ASEAN statement and talk of further European Union and United States sanctions are unlikely to have any impact on Southeast Asian country given the support of India and China.

The Chinese issued a statement calling for the world to respect Burmese sovereignty and laws, and is seen as an indication that China, a veto power will not support any United Nations actions.

John Yettaw whose unauthorised visit led to Aung San Suu Kyi’s prosecution has himself been sentenced to seven years imprisonment, four of which will be for hard labour.

Four employees of the Rio Tinto Group have been formally arrested in China on charges of bribery and using improper practises in its negotiations with Chinese companies. The Chinese accuse the men of improperly learning the negotiating position of Chinese companies wishing to buy iron ore, and through this charging 700 billion yuan (US$102.46 billion) more then they would otherwise have been able to

The four were initially held on espionage charges and have been held since early July. The formal charges allows the Chinese authorities to hold the four a further seven months as it prepares its case against them. Their arrests followed the collapse of an attempted by Chinese owned Chinalco to raise its stake in the Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto Group to 18%.

Michael Jackson will be the star of a film to be released on October 28, some four months after his death. The film will be primarily cut from footage of Jackson rehearsing for the series of concerts that would have taken place at the O2 in London, but will also feature interviews with Jackson’s family and friends.

The film becomes possible after AEG Live, the promoter of the O2 concerts, reached an US$60 million agreement with Columbia Pictures for over 100 hours of footage of Jackson preparing for his swan song.

“He was the architect of ‘This is it‘, and we were his builders…” said Kenny Ortega, Jackson’s collaborator on the project “…it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”

Dock worker killed by snapped cable

Wednesday, October 5, 2005

A dock worker on the Panamanian cargo vessel Ma Altair was killed when a cable snapped and threw him through the air. Witnesses say that the 54 year old worker was struck on his right side by a 1-1/2 inch cable being used to unload steel products.

Authorities were notified at 8:10 am CDT (1310 UTC). The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Snapped cables are a significant occupational hazard, capable of maiming and dismembering people nearby. Equipment struck by cables snapping under load is often destroyed.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

London cop fired for rape despite ‘insufficient evidence’ to prosecute

Friday, November 19, 2010

An officer with London’s Metropolitan Police (‘the Met’) has been fired for raping a woman, despite the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) declining to prosecute after saying there was insufficient evidence to prove the offence. The CPS would have to back the case up beyond reasonable doubt before a court, but the Met’s internal hearing considered only the balance of probabilities.

The policeman, whose name was not released as he has not been charged, met the woman — who is in her early twenties — after she became unwell following a night drinking with friends at a hotel party in Russell Square. The officer took her to a nearby pub where he had been drinking; later, he said he got her a glass of water, after which she vomited. CCTV footage showed the pair embrace. They then went to St Pancras railway station, where the officer was to sleep in a police locker room before going on duty that morning.

She would later claim to have little recollection of events, but that she awoke to find herself being raped. She told police in March last year, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation. The accused man stated at interview the sex was consensual. The IPCC’s file was passed to the CPS.

Met Commander Mark Simmons said “[t]his officer acted in an intolerable way and it is only right that once such dreadful behaviour was found proven the man was dismissed from the Met.” IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said “[t]he actions of this officer will rightly appal the public as they have appalled me. His behaviour was in my view predatory and he exploited the vulnerability of a young woman. He… took her to police premises and had sex with her without her consent. … His conduct would be contemptible from anyone — from a police officer it is nothing short of despicable.” A Women Against Rape statement called the woman “…very courageous. It is very difficult to report a police officer to the force that the rapist belongs to and we know of a lot of women who are too scared to do that.” The group called the CPS’s actions “outrageous”.

Tips On How To Pack For A Ski Vacation

By Anna Notton

Many outdoor sports enthusiasts love taking ski vacations. When packing for a ski vacation, there are a number of specific items that should be included which will ensure that you not only have fun, but you will also be well-protected. Below are a number of ski-tested tips to perfect ski vacation packing:

Clothing: It is important that you wear warm protective clothing because you never know when the temperature will take a sudden drop in the temperature. Make sure you pack clothing that will allow you to dress in layers. You should pack warm sweaters, thin sweaters, polo-neck shirts, and a fleece jacket. Also, pack a ski jacket and ski pants. Do not forget to pack warm thermal socks to keep your feet from getting cold. The thinner thermal sock will be more comfortable in the ski boots.

Protect Head and Hands: It is important to wear a comfortable ski hat that covers the entire head, including the forehead. Thermal gloves are good choice as they will keep your hands warm as you ski the slopes. You should keep an extra hat and gloves in case you lose one.

Environmental Protection: The cold air and sun can be damaging to the skin so you should bring sunscreen, Chap Stick, and hand moisturizer. You should also wear a quality pair of sunglasses as the sun can be quite bright against the snow. As well, the snow can be very wet and slushy so bring a pair of warm boots. You should bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes or boots in case you plan on walking to the local town to eat and do some shopping.

Water: With the exercise and warm clothing, you can easily dehydrate when skiing. To prevent dehydration, bring a water bottle with you. You should drink enough water when skiing to not only prevent dehydration, but also migraines that can result from the higher elevation.

Skis: If you are bringing skis with you, pack clothes around them in the ski bag if the carrier will allow it. Also, don’t forget your ski boots, goggles, and helmet. Try to put as much as you can in your carry-on bags to avoid extra charges for your flight. It may be easier and less expensive just to rent the ski equipment at the ski resort. You can maximize space by tucking small items such as ski gloves and socks inside your ski boots. As well, do not forget your print outs for the lift tickets, ski lessons, and rentals.

A ski vacation is always an exciting time. One way to ruin a great ski vacation is to pack improper items or forget something essential. It is important to create a ski vacation packing list to avoid any issues once you arrive at the vacation destination. As well, when you know what you have to pack, it will save you money as you will not have to buy the items that you forgot. Good planning and packing smart will ensure that your ski vacation is fun and hassle-free.

Thinking Beyond Motorola An Analysis Of Walkie Talkies In India}

THINKING BEYOND MOTOROLA AN ANALYSIS OF WALKIE TALKIES IN INDIA

by

Pandey Nirmal

THINKING BEYOND MOTOROLA AN ANALYSIS OF WALKIE TALKIES IN INDIA

Why is a brand name important? Why do companies spend millions of dollars every year for just advertisements and promotions? Reaching out to customers and keeping them reminded of the brand/product/service is the easiest way to ensure they end up buying the same. A bigger company/ brand spends a lot more on ads and recover that cost by increasing the price of the product. While in a lot of cases a bigger brand ensures good quality, you cannot just assume that a smaller/ developing brand is no good.

Intelligent customers always go in search of products that are cheaper, more effective over mere brand name. One perfect example that I can think of here is the priority often given to brands like Motorola in the radio communication field.

Motorola is a multinational brand that is a leader in the telecommunications field for more than 80 years now. They are manufacturers of smart phones, tablets, computers, mobile telephone, networking systems, Wireless broadband networks along with two way radios or walkie talkies.

Motorola spends millions on marketing their radios both online and offline. They produce good devices, no doubt about that. If you are a budding startup or if you find their pricing a little over your budget, you dont have to spend over board or compromise on cheaper alternatives. There are a lot of brands in India that offer really good radio devices at costs much lesser than Motorolas.

TalkPRO is one such walkie talkie device that you should check out. Manufactured by Iconet wireless, this is a company founded in the year 1988 by Captain Anil Midha. With more than 40 years of experience in the Indian radio communication industry, he has spends years in developing devices that are perfect for usage in the harsh and demanding Indian terrain.

TalkPRO walkie talkies

Right now, they offer four different models of walkie talkies for professional and commercial usage – TalkPRO H350 Plus, TalkPRO H450 A, TalkPRO H350 B and TalkPRO H250A.

All these devices are top class in built, functionality and usage and adhere to Mil Std. 810-C, D, E and F. Batteries are made of long lasting Li-ion and Li-Poly and range between 2000 mAh to 3000 mAh. All these devices have a talk time of up to 48 hours. They are water proof dust proof and rust proof.

There is not one feature that you will find in any top model walkie talkie that is missing in a TalkPRO device. They are definitely cheaper when compared to these top end models.

If you have a lot of money to spend, then definitely go for popular brands available in the market. If you are on a tight budget, please refrain from buying walkie talkies sold at dead beat prices online. These stop working very soon and have limited range. Most of them are not licensed either.

Visit www.iconetwireless.com to know more about long lasting, good walkie talkie devices and talk to their team of experts to understand how you can save money on your purchase. It doesnt cost anything to talk to them! Try it out.

Iconet, Indias oldest radio communication company adds another feather in its bonnet with the success of TalkPRO-a one if its kind walkie-talkie developed in 2010. Considered to be the best in manufacturing walkie talkies and accessories which are high quality and greatly supporting, it has helped millions of customers around the world and clearly stands out from the rest of its competitors in terms of quality, reliability and cost.
