Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Everything You Must Know To Keep Sciatica At Bay

However, there are times when finding the cause of the pain is not easy.

The Major Symptoms

The first step towards handling this problematic condition is understanding sciatica symptoms and treatment. Before checking out the treatment options, check out the main symptoms below:

 • Burning or tingling feeling down the leg
 • Shooting pain making it impossible to stand
 • Leg or buttock pain that grows more when sitting
 • Constant pain on a particular side of the buttock
 • Difficulty in moving the leg or foot
 • Numbness or weakness in the leg

Though sciatica affects one side of the lower body, it may also extent to the foot or toes. Degree of pain and discomfort varies from individual to individual. While some people find the pain irritating and infrequent, others experience severe and continuous pain.

What Actually Causes sciatica?

As already stated, irritation of the sciatica nerve is the main reason behind this painful condition. However there are some other possibilities as well. Take a look below to know them:

 • Pregnancy
 • Lumbar spinal stenosis
 • Spondylolisthesis
 • Degenerative disc disease
 • Overweight
 • Improper exercising habits
 • Sleeping on extremely soft mattress
 • Wearing high heels

Diagnosis

To diagnose the problem, medical history of the patient is considered by the doctors. After this, examination of hips, back and legs is done to test the flexibility, reflexes, strength and sensation. Some of the other tests are:

 • MRI scans
 • Nerve conduction
 • X-rays
 • CT scans

Treatment

Sciatica treatment Raleighfocuses on treating inflammation and pressure. Some of the popular treatment options include:

 • Physiotherapy to prevent further consequences
 • Anti-inflammatory drugs or oral steroids to settle down inflammation
 • Epidural steroid injections at the origin of the swollen sciatica nerve roots
 • Surgery when all the manual and medical treatments don’t work the expected way

Conclusion

Sciatica is very painful and might damage the nerve permanent if left unattended. However, this is an exception and happens in rarest case. Still, if you have any of the above symptoms visit the doctor right away and get the problem addressed.

Tips For Preventing High Blood Pressure Naturally

High blood pressure is also known to cause erectile problems and prostate issues for guys. Having hypertension can also cause fatigue, brain fog, and memory problems.

In fact, hypertension also accelerates hair loss, high blood pressure accelerates aging… And one of the primary causes of hypertension is the negative changes in your hormones, due to aging.

However, it’s also very fixable and you do NOT need drugs. In fact, a combination of 6 specific fruits and vegetables, can dramatically lower high blood pressure.

You can treat high blood pressure at home by eating these foods separately, or you can blend them into juice or smoothie.

Blood Pressure MeaningYour heart pumps blood, oxygen, and nutrients through the arteries in your body. Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls.

There are two readings that measure blood pressure:

Systolic pressure is the higher number, it measures the force of blood being pushed around your body when your heart contracts.Diastolic pressure is the lower number, it measures when the heart relaxes between beats.High blood pressure is when your blood pressure is always higher than it should be, this is also known as hypertension and is usually diagnosed when your levels are always above 140 over 90 millimeters of mercury.

It makes your arteries less stretchy and damages the walls of your arteries, this makes it easier for fatty deposits to build up and limits the circulation of blood and oxygen. It can lead to a heart attack or stroke, high blood pressure typically has no symptoms, if left untreated, it can lead to heart and circulatory diseases.

Anyone can have high blood pressure, it can be caused by eating too much salt, drinking too much alcohol, being overweight or not being active enough.

Blood Pressure And ExerciseExercise helps to lower your blood pressure by increasing the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. The body movement that increases your heartbeat and breathing rate is called aerobic exercises.

Incorporating them into your daily routine is easy. You can choose any moderate physical activity like walking, jogging, climbing stairs, playing sports, swimming, bicycling, household chores like cleaning the floor, gardening, etc.

Blood Pressure And AlcoholA lot of people drink, and a lot of people have high blood pressure. It’s been shown that alcohol actually increases blood pressure.

Healthy blood pressure is considered 120 over 80, a number that can fluctuate depending on your lifestyle.

Blood pressure is not static, so if we were to put a catheter inside you to watch your blood pressure’s it would go up and down depending on the stress level, depending on your situation, and in this fluctuate, but the body is very good at regulating the norms.

Too much alcohol can keep your body dehydrated and keep your blood pressure high. If your blood pressure is consistently high, doctors may recommend making some lifestyle changes include diet, exercise, watching the salt intake and alcohol intake would make a huge difference.

If you drink doctors say to do so in moderation that means no more than two drinks per day for men and no more than one drink per day for women.

How to Treat High Blood Pressure At Hometreat high blood pressure at home by eating these fruitsHere are 6 fruits to treat high blood pressure at home.

1-CeleryThe best vegetable to add to the blender to fight high blood pressure is Celery.

Celery has almost no calories. However, they’re great for lowering blood pressure because they work similarly to calcium channel blocking drugs, but with NO side-effects. Unfortunately, you do need to consume a lot of it to get maximum benefits for lowering blood pressure.

For this reason, I take a special form of celery seed extract in a pill, 300 mg daily, which is the equivalent of taking 50 lbs of a celery stalk. It’s clinically proven to work, it’s easy and convenient.

2-TomatoesTomatoes contain Lycopene, a substance found in the Tomato seeds. It helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol, it’s a double benefit. I like the little baby grape tomatoes.

However, if you’re not a fan of Tomatoes, then you can take Lycopene extract about 40 mg daily.

FEMA accused of misusing trained disaster workers as public-relations workers

Monday, September 12, 2005

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is being criticized for misallocation of personnel in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. FEMA representatives said they requested volunteers from fire departments around the U.S., to handle its community relations campaign. However, a document FEMA sent to local fire departments asked for firefighters with very specific skills and who were capable of working in “austere conditions”. Fire departments around the nation responded by sending crews to the FEMA staging ground in Atlanta. Some of these crews were unaware that they were only going to be used for public relations work. Others, however, merely hoped that FEMA would allocate them to rescue and damage control operations once it saw their qualifications.

The firefighter’s objections are particularly poignant as one of FEMA public relations training seminars coincided with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin plea for firefighters on national television, to relieve his own exhausted crews. It is unclear if FEMA’s request for firefighters prevented any municipalities from responding to Mayor Nagin’s request.

Some firefighters have objected to their use as FEMA public relations officers because their municipalities must bear the cost of their salaries, as well as endure reduced firefighting capacity. FEMA has stated that it sought to use firefighters to avoid background checks required of federal employees.

Firefighters began receiving their assignments Monday, September 5th. Among these was a crew of 50 assigned to tour the devastated areas with President Bush and the press.

Glazer caps Manchester United’s player transfer spending at £25m a year

Saturday, June 11, 2005

The intentions of Manchester United’s new owner, U.S. sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer, for the club have been revealed. Although spokespersons for Mr. Glazer (including his son) have stressed that nothing has been finalised, it appears that he intends to raise ticket prices, income, profits whilst capping spending on player transfers.

Mr. Glazer – who owns over 76.2% of the club’s shares through his investment company, Red Football – enraged fans when he started to accumulate shares earlier this year in an attempt to gain control of the what amounts to the world’s most successful football club. Manchester United has more fans, a higher market value, a more valuable and more widely recognised brand and is more profitable than any other football club in the world.

To gain control of the club, Glazer used borrowed money and he is set to transfer this money to the club’s books when he gains full control. The borrowed money will result in large interest repayments – pushing the clubs finances into the red. To counter this Mr. Glazer apparently intends to raise ticket prices by about 50% and to increase revenues by 52% to £245.6m (from £161.5m this year) over the next five years. Apart from ticket price increases, this jump in revenue will be achieved by a 61% jump in match day sales, a 13% increase in media sales, and a 76% rise in sales of merchandise and other commercial activities.

As part of his plans, expenditure on player transfers will be capped at just £25m a year. This is a very low figure for a English football club endeavouring to win domestic and European trophies. Seven years ago the club spent £28m on players, since then expenditure in England on players has increased hugely.

Obama’s new stance on same-sex marriage earns donations

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Following the announcement this week by U.S. President Barack Obama that he supports the legalisation of marriage for same-sex partners, the Obama campaign claims to have received an increase in donations and support from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) supporters.

Financial support for Democratic politicians by LGBT groups had fallen to the lowest rate in 16 years, with only $590,000 raised so far in the election cycle. A June fundraising event planned in Los Angeles and focused on the LGBT community is likely to sell out and Obama’s campaign team is seeking to expand the event.

Gay people better get out there and support the president.

Chad Griffin, the incoming head of LGBT campaigning group the Human Rights Campaign, said that the President’s statement on marriage “will further energize an already excited base”. Obama supporter and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Wade Randlett said that the announcement “reminds people of the Obama they worked hard for in 2007, 2008. Someone who takes strong, bold stands”.

The sex advice columnist Dan Savage wrote on Twitter: “Gay people better get out there and support the president. If he loses in November, we’ll be blamed.”

Opponents of same-sex marriage have also used the President’s statement on the issue to raise money: the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) have run a three-day long “money bomb” fundraiser this week which raised $20,000. NOM plan to increase the amount spent on supporting candidates in federal elections this year.
