Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Buying A Car: Crossing The Obstacle Of Down Payment}

Buying a Car: Crossing the Obstacle of Down Payment

by

Alan HendricksIn the times of ever expanding world and fast moving lives, traveling with comfort has become a major necessity for everyone. Today, everybody wants to reach his destination on time and in style. Maybe that’s why a car has become a commodity that one must possess. Thanks to the developed financing environment in the country, buying a car is not difficult. With the help of down payment, you can have your dream car in your garage.Buying a car on loan majorly involves two stages i.e. the down payment and the monthly payments. Down payment is provided to the dealer right before purchasing the car. On the other hand, a car buyer has to make monthly payments to the lender.Down payment is useful for the dealer as well as the car buyer. It acts as security for dealer and helps the car buyer in reducing the debt burden.Deciding the Down Payment AmountDeciding the down payment amount might seem a tedious job but actually the factors governing the same are easy to understand and calculate. The lender considers the following factors before approving the loan amount:>>Credit Score >>DTI (debt to income) Ratio >>Financial History >>Debt Repayment HistoryIf the lender considers you a less risky car buyer, he will approve you for a larger loan amount. It means you will be able to buy a car with a smaller down payment amount. Therefore maintaining a good credit score and a lower DTI ratio will encourage lenders to lend you more money. What to do if the Loan Application is considered Weak by the Lender?Do not worry if you do not have a good credit score or a strong DTI ratio. In such a situation, you will have to opt for a larger down payment amount. Here are a few options that can help you in getting together money for down payment:Trade-inYou can exchange your old car and get a discount on the new car. You should also check for discount offers and other schemes that the dealer provides for trading old cars.SavingChoose your desired car and try to save money till the time you are ready to buy the car. It will help you to avoid obtaining personal loan for down payment.BorrowAlthough being the least advisable option, borrowing from a friend or a family member can sometimes be the only way to arrange money for down payment.Borrowing against your 401(k)If you have a retirement savings plan, you can borrow money against it and pay it off later.Selling off unwanted itemsYou can lower your burden of arranging money for down payment by selling things that you no longer use and are just covering up your garage space.Get a giftYou can ask your friends and relatives to gift you money. As the gift amount up to $14,000 is excluded annually, your donor will be able to provide you money without any burden of tax.Remember that down payment can be a challenge while buying a car. But with the right financial planning and management, you can cross the obstacle of down payment and buy your desired car.

The University of Tokyo Hospital, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, and Keio University Hospital are among the threatened institutions.

Police said that the letters all appear to come from the same source but they have not released the actual letters yet. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is investigating, but nothing suspicious has been found at the hospitals.

Oral Roberts University president accused of illegal political donations and financial misappropriation

Friday, October 5, 2007

Richard Roberts, the President of Oral Roberts University, and his wife, Lindsay Roberts, are accused of illegal political contributions, financial wrong-doing, and wrongful firings in a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed by three former professors who claim “they were wrongfully dismissed after reporting the school’s involvement in a local political race.” According to KTEN television news, “Roberts’ statement says personal expenses are charged to him and he personally pays them on a monthly basis.” On October 3, Roberts “told students and faculty during his weekly chapel Wednesday that the lawsuit is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

Richard has been president of ORU since his father, Oral Roberts university founder and former faith healer, “semi-retired” in 1993.

How To Gain Weight For Thin Skinny Girls

By Chris Chew

So you are fed up with your thin skinny frame and have always wanted that well rounded curves of a sexy feminine woman. As hard as you might try stuffing your face green with whatever food you can get your hands on, you just can’t seem to put on even a single extra pound of weight. Why is it so hard and hard for you to gain weight? You probably may have asked that question a zillion times.

In this world that is obsessed with losing weight, as it seems that all the advertisements, fitness programs, diets regimens are all targeting at people who want to lose weight. This onslaught barrage of weight loss programs drown out the concerns of underweight women like you trying your darndest best to put on weight. That is certainly very frustrating for you, isn’t it?

To compound matters, your search for weight programs in the internet kept showing up muscle building systems and muscle weight gaining programs for men. Why are skinny girls like you being ignored?

Well ladies, you aren’t being ignored. It is just that your mind refuses to register certain truths those programs are telling you. Before you get insulted and clawed me up, please be patient and read on.

You see, things aren’t so bleak after all. Because the good news is that there isn’t much difference for gaining weight between men and women. Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Therefore those weight gain programs for men work pretty well for girls too because the principles that a naturally thin woman must adopt if she wishes to quickly put on healthy weight are the same principles that worked for the boys!

Now, here are some of your mental blocks I spoke about earlier. Most women, and I believe that including you, have a myriad of mental stumbling blocks regarding weight gain techniques. Such as you probably do not want to consume too much calories in case you become fat in the wrong places or you certainly do not want to start weight training because you are terrified of getting big muscles like those of bodybuilders! Am I right to say that?

Listen ladies, with due respect, in order to gain healthy weight effectively and quickly, you will have to remove those mental blocks now! Your fears are irrational and are completely unfounded!

You see, most women have the mistaken impression that training with weights will make them look muscular and thus compromising their feminine beauty. This I can verify because a large number of the enquiries that I receive from females asking for putting on weight advice will invariably qualify their requests with statements like “I don’t want to look like a man’ or “I don’t want to look like a bodybuilder”

Now get this right once and for all! Women simply don’t naturally possess enough of the male hormone, testosterone, that will allow them to become huge muscular hunks! No amount of weight training is going to change that fact. Even most men are not naturally predisposed to be a bodybuilder, what more of a woman?

Yes, I know what you are thinking right now. You are asking what about pictures of female bodybuilders you have seen, right? The sad thing is that those photos are the main culprits that led to your irrational fear of weight training. You see, those women bodybuilders that you see got where they are because of very intensive and special training with the consumption of tons of supplements to get those muscle mass up with plenty of professional help.

As a matter of fact, many female bodybuilders with extremely huge muscles and who exhibit masculine characteristics didn’t get that way through natural training. Instead, they use dangerous steroids to get them so huge! So let that sink in!

Furthermore, they didn’t get that way overnight. You just don’t simply wake up one morning and become a muscular woman bodybuilder right? You must understand that it has taken them many years of dedicated intensive training to get where they are and you certainly aren’t going to do that, don’t you?

Even if so, if you feel like you are becoming a tad too big or your blessed boyfriend is hiding behind you at the first sign of trouble, you can simply stop training. After all, when that happens, then your objective at gaining weight would have been happily achieved, right?

Yes, you will certainly put on some muscle when you are training with weights, but the muscles that you will be developing will not be huge and bulky. Instead, your new muscles will add tone and curves to your body shape making you look healthier and more attractive. Don’t you want that?

Another problem in your quest to put on weight is that many thin and skinny women set out to gain any weight and gaining body fat is fine with them. However, there is a major problem with this approach in putting on weight. If the weight you gain is primarily from increased body fat, you are most likely to be displeased with your results. This is because you have no control of where those extra fat will be going to on your body.

That goes on to say that if you do not control your fat gain (which you can’t since where your fat goes to is genetically pre-programmed), your extra ugly fat could end up unevenly distributed in all the wrong places like your belly, love handles, butt, thighs, arms and so on.

Therefore, your best bet to improve your physique in the way you want is to go after lean muscle weight gain. In this way, not only will you put on weight, you will also gain healthy weight and is in a position to dictate where the extra pounds are going to be. In other words, you can sculpt your body the way you want it to be shaped and that is sexy!

So girls, if you can move past your own mental blocks, you can certainly be assured that healthy and pleasing weight gain that is well within your reach. Of course, you must also consume enough good calories to ensure your success in putting on the extra pounds.

Wishing you all the best in putting on those extra pounds of sexy female weight and body curves.

Top 5 Most Common Jobs With Asbestos Exposure

By Lawrence Reaves

The health risks associated with asbestos exposure are better understood today than they were several years ago. The major health factor associated with asbestos exposure is mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos is a substance which is chemically composed of impure forms of magnesium-silicate fibers. Asbestos was once widely used because of its durability and heat-resistant qualities. The authorities placed it on a ban after scientists linked exposure to the substance to mesothelioma and other lung conditions. These conditions were widely noticed among certain categories of workers in occupational areas such as the military, builders and contractors.

Workplaces Prone to Asbestos Exposure

The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that the insulation in many buildings in the US contains asbestos. Workplaces which carry the greatest risk of asbestos exposure are:

1. Railroads

2. Shipyards

3. Factories

4. Gas mask manufacturers

5. Construction sites

6. Mines

7. Insulation manufacturers

Even within this short list of high-risk work places, there are workers who are more at risk than others. For example, workers on a construction site are at a greater risk for asbestos exposure than those who work in a company which manufactures gas masks.

The 5 Most Common Jobs with Asbestos Exposure Are:

1. Railroad workers

2. Ship builders

3. Factory workers

4. Construction workers

5. Miners

These occupations are high-risk for exposure to asbestos because workers interface directly with materials that contain the fine asbestos fibers. When inhaled, these fibers cause asbestosis, pleural mesothelioma or other forms of lung cancer to develop. Family members of these workers are at risk for secondary exposure to asbestos. This happens because the workers gather asbestos dust and fibers on their clothes which they then take home.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned new uses of asbestos in the USA, but in 1991 their efforts to have most uses of asbestos banned by 1997 fell through as the US Federal Court blocked this action. One blogger, Asbest21, stated in a post on Blog Carnival that manufacturers were aware from as far back as seventy years ago that asbestos was hazardous, but they kept that knowledge hidden. Workers exposed to asbestos were not given sufficient warning of the associated dangers in the mid-1960s.

Seeking Redress for Asbestos Exposure

Many workers exposed to asbestos and who later develop mesothelioma or other lung conditions go for years without realizing that something is wrong. This form of cancer takes up to twenty or forty years to manifest itself. This means that people exposed to asbestos can live normal lives for several years before realizing that their health is deteriorating. The nonspecific nature of the symptoms of mesothelioma can further delay the detection and subsequent treatment for the condition.

Conclusion

Despite the efforts of the Environmental Protection Agency to advocate for the health of workers exposed to asbestos the threat remains high for some workers. These workers face the risk of developing the associated conditions of asbestos exposure. It is best that workers exposed to asbestos receive regular screenings to have early detection of any developing condition. Feeling healthy and having no apparent symptoms are not valid reasons to avoid having regular screenings.

MySpace loses over ten million users in one month

Sunday, March 27, 2011

Social networking website MySpace lost over ten million users between January and February 2011, according to comScore. In February 2011, the Internet website had less than 63 million users, down from a previous total of approximately 73 million. In the same month, 2.3 million individuals were on the site in the United Kingdom.

In the space of one year, MySpace has also suffered a number of user losses approaching fifty million. Earlier this year, MySpace announced their intentions to eliminate five hundred jobs around the world, which equates to half of its employee total.

I would be surprised if MySpace survives the year.

MySpace has contributed to the success of British music artists, including Kate Nash, Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkeys. In 2005, News Corporation purchased the social networking site for £330 million (US$529 million, €376 million). Five years ago, the site was proving to be largely popular, according to Newsbeat. Recently, the website has been facing difficult competition from other Internet websites, such as Facebook and YouTube and has now been modified to be more significantly based on the music industry. Newsbeat has reported that the value of MySpace at present may be £50 million (US$80 million, €57 million).

MySpace’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Jones has claimed that the website is “no longer a social network anymore” and that it is currently a “social entertainment destination”. Zack Whittaker, of business technology news website ZDNet, has commented that he “would be surprised if MySpace survives the year”.
