British Airways flight makes emergency landing in Iceland, terrorism ruled out

Saturday, August 26, 2006

A British Airways (BA) flight from London to Denver made an emergency landing at an airport in Iceland today after smoke was seen emerging from an oven in the aircraft’s rear kitchen.

A BA spokesman said that the Boeing 777 landed safely at Keflavik Airport. He added that the plane’s 268 passengers left the craft unharmed.

A spokeswoman from the Iceland Civil Aviation Administration ruled out any terrorist involvement. She added: “They were 50 miles from Keflavik when it was thought there was a fire. But it turned out to be only smoke.”

The flight should complete its journey to the US tomorrow. Passengers are spending the night in a hotel.

Toyota accused of misleading public over recalls

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Toyota has been accused by a U.S. House of Representatives committee with misleading the public and investigators over its recent recalls.

The accusations, in a statement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, claim that Toyota both relied on a flawed study in its assessment of the issue of sticking accelerator pedals at the heart of the recalls, and then made misleading statements about its response. According to the authors of the letter, Henry Waxman and Bart Stupak, Toyota dismissed, rather than investigated, the idea that the cars’ computers were at fault. In a statement, James Lentz, the president of Toyota’s American division, claimed that hardware issues were to blame, and that dealers were repairing the faulty part. Toyota also released a study commissioned from the research firm Exponent that said electronic systems were not to blame.

According to the House committee, however, the study involved only six vehicles, none of which had problems with their electrical systems, and was insufficient to produce an accurate result. “Our preliminary assessment is that Toyota resisted the possibility that electronic defects could cause safety concerns, relied on a flawed engineering report and made misleading public statements concerning the adequacy of recent recalls to address the risk of sudden unintended acceleration.”

The company is under a criminal investigation, and has received two subpoenas for documents from two House committees relating to the recalls, although whether they are directly related to the letter is unclear. The documents are related to accelerator issues in several models, as well as brake problems with the Prius hybrid car, and were served earlier in in February by a federal grand jury and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Toyota has released upwards of 75,000 pages of documents under the requests.

In a separate, though related, development, it has emerged that Toyota last year negotiated a limited recall for two models, the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES, that were affected by the accelerator recalls, saving the company an estimated $100 million. A confidential internal presentation in July 2009 made the claim, and a month later, a Lexus ES, one of the models under the limited recall crashed in California, killing four people. The claims apparently referenced a September, 2007 recall of floor mats that could trap gas pedals, the same problem that triggered a full recall of numerous Toyota cars to fix the same problem. In the same presentation, the company claimed to have avoided recalls of another model related to rust, as well as delaying new federal safety regulations.

Forex Trading: How To Create Fantastic Wealth From Forex Trading

By I-key Benney, CEO

If you search on the internet youll find millions of investment programs such as real estate, stock trading, bond trading, mutual funds, CDs, auction programs and various internet programs.

I have not done many internet income opportunities or programs or affiliate programs because I had been lucky to discover a very easy way to make money through forex trading, (Foreign currency trading) safely on the internet.

Perhaps you know about only stock trading or bond trading which are common, but not forex trading.

Forex trading is the most profitable and attractive internet income opportunity because you can do it from home or office and from any country in the world.

In forex trading, you dont need to do any marketing or selling or internet promotion to succeed.

In forex trading, you dont need to spend thousands of dollars to do any internet promotion.

In forex trading, you dont need any stocks or warehousing.

In forex trading , all that youve to do is open an account with one of the brokers with as little as $300 or $2000.

Then follow simple instructions to buy and sell the currencies.

When the price of the currency is low, you buy.

In a few seconds or minutes, the price will go up, and you sell it and make a profit.

By so doing , in a day, you can easily make $500-$1000 by just buying, selling and trading these foreign currencies for about 3 or 4 hrs!

And get this:

You dont even have to be stuck sitting behind your computer buying and selling these foreign currencies.

You can enter all your buy trades and specify the sell prices you desire and then log off.

Whenever the values of these foreign currencies rise and your selling prices reach, the currencies will be automatically sold for you and you make money!

You can do forex trading and at the same time keep your day job, because in forex trading, there is no work to do.

In the future when you have made hundreds of thousands of dollars, you may then quit your job and just keep doing currency forex trading forever and go on permanent vacation!

To understand the beauty of forex trading Picture this:

In the morning, you get up from sleep at 6 am.

You go to your bathroom and have your shower.

At 7am, you hurry and eat your breakfast.

At 7.20 am, you login into your forex trading account on the internet and spend 10 minutes to buy about 3 or 4 different currencies, [for example British Pound, Euro, CHF (Swiss Currency) and Yen (Japanese currency).

You can specify the price at which you wish to sell each currency.

Then you can log off.

By 9 am, youre at work in your office or business place.

You do your job as usual and by 5 pm, youre finished and heading home.

When you get back home around 6.30 pm, you login into your forex trading account to see how much money youve made.

Holy Molly, there in your account it says you have made $750!

Is this for real?, you wonder

Yes, it is. (Your eyes are not deceiving you)

$750 in a day for just clicking your mouse twice and doing no work?

(Whereas at your job, you work 8 hrs, but make only probably $150..)

This is how easy it is to make money from forex trading.

But before you use real money to open a live forex trading account, you have to open a free trial (demo) forex trading account and practice first, to understand how it works and to acquire the right skills.

This free demo (trial) forex trading account (forex simulation trading) will help you to reduce a lot of risks that can lead to loss.

In forex trading, you can choose how much money to invest, how much money to make and when to make it.

You can make money daily, 365 days all year from forex trading.

Your computer can be transformed into an ATM machine that cranks out cash for you daily (without large investment or hassles) from forex trading.

In forex trading, you can choose what type of risk you can manage, when to invest and when not to invest.

In forex trading, youre the boss. You may do as you please.

When forex trading is compared to other investment programs such as stock trading, bond trading, mutual funds, real estate and regular business, it is evident that forex trading is the fastest and greatest way to make money in the world.

Forex trading is a 2.5 trillion dollars daily business and it is larger than all the stock trading in the world combined.

These are some of the reasons why I believe that forex trading is the fastest and best way to create fantastic wealth.

Perhaps from reading this article youll now come to know why forex trading is the secret behind the greatest wealth on earth and why it has been kept hidden from the average people of the world and therefore little known to the masses.

May these forex trading insights open your eyes to the possibility of infinite wealth and success that can be yours from forex trading.

Wikinews’ overview of the year 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Commercial Building Insurance The Average Clause

If you have a commercial building insurance, your policy will contain a clause known as “the average clause”. Whilst there are many clauses, conditions and warranties within every policy, some are more important than others. The average clause, as many have found out, is one of the more important ones.

The chances are, that even if you have read your policy wording, or reviewed it, this clause is not one that you have heard of. So what exactly does it mean?

The average, or reinstatement clause, simply states that you need to insure for the correct amount. Unlike houses and cars, insurers do not have unlimited statistics that say how much it will cost to replace a commercial building. If you think about your family car. If it is a 2004 Ford Galaxy, with 50,000 miles, then it will not take long to find out how much it would cost to buy an equivalent model.

So, whilst you are asked to declare the value of the car at quote stage, this does not really affect things. But, when you are talking about business insurance, things are different. We do not have scales, or levels of cover. You need to state exactly how much a building would cost to re-instate fully.

If you have a modern, steel framed, building with dwarf brick surrounding walls, you will be able to work out, very roughly what it would cost to rebuild. You take a cost per square yard, say £75, and multiply this by the total area. As it is modern materials, then the rebuilding cost is not going to change greatly. If you are talking about a Grade I listed hotel, in the middle of nowhere, with difficult access roads, then the rebuilding cost can, without question, be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds per square yard.

If you have a commercial building, such as the hotel, insured for £1,000,000, many people think that if it were burned to the ground and destroyed completely, then the insurers would simply pay out £1,000,000. However, this is not the case and this is where average kicks in. If the building would really cost £2,000,000 to rebuild, then you are effectively under-insuring the structure.

The insurers are receiving 50% less premium than they should have, so any claims will be reduced by 50%. If the building were completely destroyed, then you will not get the £1,000,000, but £500,000. Some people feel this in unfair, but you have to think about from the insurers point of view. They have not been paid the full premium for the risk, so it is quite right that they can turn around and reduce claims.

Insurers do have a heart though. They understand that there will always be cases where this is the potential for a sum insured to be slightly out. Most commercial building insurance policies, will allow leeway of between 10 and 20%. So, if your £1,000,000 policy is really for a building that costs £1,150,000 to rebuild, most insurers will pay the full amount and not reduce this by 15%.

As with all policies, you need to speak to an expert, independent business insurance broker, to get advice on not only the cost, but the inner terms and conditions, before you purchase any policy.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Apple announces Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

At the company’s own Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote at the Moscone West center in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the next generation of software products from Apple. Apple unveiled Lion, the new version of their Mac OS X operating system for desktop and laptop computers that brings new features to the software. They also demonstrated iOS 5, a new version of the operating system that powers iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. Alongside both announcements, Jobs also announced a new iCloud service to sync data among all devices. All 5,200 participating developers will spend the rest of the week in workshops with Apple employees; developer releases of each product were made available today.

Mac OS X Lion will be shipped in July through the online Mac App Store available on Mac computers for US$29. According to Apple, the update adds over 250 new features to the OS. Employee Phil Schiller discussed new multitouch gestures along with a dynamic task manager named Mission Control that shows open applications. During the keynote, Schiller said, “The Mac has outpaced the PC industry every quarter for five years running and with OS X Lion we plan to keep extending our lead.” It also adds full support for the Mac port of the popular App Store, full screen applications, iOS-style app icon lists called Launchpad, and other iOS-like features including a revamped Mail and Auto Save among others. Mac OS X Lion was announced at a different Apple event several months ago and will replace Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which was released in 2009.

Soon after, the company also introduced the latest installment in its popular mobile operating system iOS. The fifth version (iOS 5) introduces around 200 new features, including a revamped notification system, which combines messages and notifications from all applications installed on the user’s device. Scott Forestall, an Apple employee, also revealed that iOS devices would no longer require a computer for setup, allowing users to ‘cut the cord’ between their devices and PCs. Magazines and newspapers also have a new folder interface; the Twitter social network is now integrated significantly into iOS devices. Improvements to the mobile Safari browser were also announced; tabbed browsing and a Reader feature introduce desktop-like functionality. Finally, new camera features are built in, including the ability to take snapshots from the lock screen, as well as iMessages, a new messaging platform for iPhones and iPads.

We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud.

CEO Steve Jobs returned to the stage to reveal Apple’s new cloud services offering, iCloud. The service integrates with Lion and iOS applications and syncs data between a user’s iOS devices. For example, calendar events created on a user’s laptop would be sent to their iPhone through iCloud. Apps, books, documents, photos, and more purchased or created on one device will be shared with others. The service is intended to launch in the fall of 2011 alongside iOS 5 and will be available with 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage for 10 devices for free. Earlier this year, Apple opened a 500,000 square foot data center in North Carolina intended to facilitate this new service. Jobs rounded the services off by unveiling a new iTunes feature that mirrors a user’s library in the cloud, allowing them to listen and download music to authorized devices. “We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud,” said Steve Jobs during the keynote. iCloud and iOS 5 will be released in the fall of 2011; Apple announced no new hardware products.
