Lost Antarctic shipwreck from 1915 Shackleton expedition, Endurance, rediscovered

Thursday, March 10, 2022

The shipwrecked remains of Endurance, which carried the British 1915 expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica, were rediscovered beneath the Antarctic waters on March 7, it was announced yesterday.

The find by the Endurance22 expedition comes over a century after the vessel was marooned off the Antarctic coast and pushed by sea ice to the bottom of the Weddell Sea.

The vessel appeared to be in excellent condition, preserved by the frigid waters. The ship’s timbers seem intact, and the name Endurance is clearly visible below the stern and above the five-pointed star Polaris — both unchanged after so much time.

Submersible craft launched by Endurance22, formed and funded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, laid cameras on the Endurance at a depth of about 3,008 meters (9,868.8 ft). The probing vehicles were launched from the main hub of the expedition, the South African icebreaker S.A. Agulhas II.

The Endurance was originally the main vessel of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition by the United Kingdom, which sought to complete the first land crossing of Antarctica. Sir Ernest, a pioneer in British Antarctic exploration in the early twentieth century, and his expedition were stranded when the Endurance became trapped by sea ice and was slowly crushed.

They camped on the ice until able to launch lifeboats to eventually reach safety. All survived, but the Endurance sank.

For years, it had been nearly impossible for explorers to locate the ship’s remains, as the Weddell Sea is covered by thick sea ice year-round. However, the past month has seen the lowest recorded level of Antarctic sea ice since satellite records began. This allowed the multinational team of experts assembled by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust to make its uncovering.

Expedition leader Dr. John Shears said of the successful expedition: “We have made polar history… and successfully completed the world’s most challenging shipwreck search” and that it was “what human beings can achieve and the obstacles they can overcome when they work together.”

Director of exploration Menson Bound said: “It is not all about the past; we are bringing the story of Shackleton and Endurance to new audiences, and to the next generation, who will be entrusted with the essential safeguarding of our polar regions and our planet. We hope our discovery will engage young people and inspire them with the pioneering spirit, courage and fortitude of those who sailed Endurance to Antarctica.”

Eleven children injured in Scottish school shooting; two teenagers detained

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Two individuals are in custody after eleven secondary school students were injured in a firearms incident near a school Auchinleck Academy, in East Ayrshire, Scotland, yesterday afternoon. Police have said they are carrying out “extensive enquiries” into the incident, which reportedly involved an air gun or BB gun.

I wasn’t really frightened at first but I’m quite shaken now as I know what damage has been done.

One pupil said he was walking near the school during the lunch hour and “saw two people behind a hedge.” There was a sound “like a small explosion,” he said. “I wasn’t really frightened at first but I’m quite shaken now as I know what damage has been done.”

Strathclyde Police said officers were attending an incident near the secondary school, which has approximately 950 students. Chief Superintendent John Thompson, who is leading the police inquiry into the incident, confirmed two people, aged 15 and 18, were detained in the area of the incident, in which eleven youths were injured.

“Subsequent inquiries directed us towards a house in Auchinleck where we have detained an 18-year-old male and a 15-year-old male,” Thompson said. “Both of those individuals are being interviewed at present and our inquiries are ongoing.” He appealed for people in the area of the incident to contact police.

East Ayrshire council stated “[t]he school responded immediately, informing the police and parents of the children involved, and sought appropriate medical attention”, and added officials were supporting pupils. Auchinleck Academy has not replied to a request for a comment from Wikinews.

Fiery collision between prison van and truck kills seven in Alabama, US

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Six applicants to join the Alabama Department of Corrections and their driver have been killed after the prison van they were traveling in collided with an 18-wheeled truck. Both vehicles burned at the scene.

Andrew David Carter, who was driving the Lewis Trucking Company truck with a cargo of treated lumber, escaped the wreck without serious injury. He was briefly hospitalised and released. The deceased have been identified as driver Rodney Kelley, and applicants Julius Erving Douier, Lionel Michael Moore, John Henry Foye Jr., Brandon Jamaal Anglin, Henry Louis Simmons, and Derrick Lamar Ivey. The oldest victim was 45 and the youngest nearly 19.

The wreck occurred on Alabama’s Route 82 near Bullock County, having left Bullock Correctional Facility to travel to Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore County for mental and physical fitness tests on the passengers before employment with the state.

The road was closed for eight hours while bodies and wreckage were recovered. As well as the van and the truck cab, part of the trucks cargo and several hundred square feet of nearby timber land were consumed by the fire. An investigation is ongoing, but it appears that the truck crossed the center line and there are no skid marks present.

The relatives of the victims will be offered counseling by the Department of Corrections.

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

New Mars Orbiter arrives for launch

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

NASA‘s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), the latest robotic spacecraft destined for Mars, arrived at Kennedy Space Center‘s Shuttle Landing Facility on April 30 aboard a C-17 cargo plane and was delivered to the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility to begin processing. Launching is scheduled for August 10, 2005.

With a mission time line through 2010, the MRO will conduct studies of the Martian atmosphere, surface and subsurface in far greater detail than previous missions. Possible landing sites for future Mars landings will be evaluated and the orbiter will also act as a high-data-rate communications relay for surface missions.

“Great work by a talented team has brought Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to this milestone in our progress toward a successful mission,” said Jim Graf of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) project manager for the mission.

Multiple mechanical assembly operations and electrical tests are scheduled to verify the craft’s readiness for launch. A May test to verify communication abilities through NASA’s Deep Space Network will be conducted and in June deployment of the high gain communications antenna will be tested. A deployment test is also scheduled for the Orbiter’s large solar arrays.

The MRO will be filled with hydrazine fuel in July for its “Mars orbit insertion burn” which reduces the craft’s velocity and places it in orbit about the red planet. July 26 will see the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter installed in an Atlas V rocket fairing for final assembly with the rocket on July 29.

After the scheduled launch, the MRO will spend seven months cruising to Mars and another six months aerobraking after orbital insertion. A variety of scientific instruments on board will be used to search for geological evidence of past seas, ancient shorelines. The craft was built near Denver by Lockheed Martin Space Systems which also supplies the Atlas V launch vehicle.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission is managed by JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems is the prime contractor for the project. International Launch Services, a Lockheed Martin joint venture, and Lockheed Martin Space Systems are providing launch services for the mission.

Most Tokyo power restored after blackout

Sunday, August 13, 2006

A power outage hit large parts of Tokyo, and Chiba, Japan. The electrical blackout occurred due to an industrial accident, in which a crane damaged some power lines accidentally at 7:40 AM local time (2240 UTC), the Kyodo News agency reported, quoting Tokyo Power Electric Co. Power was reported to have been restored to most areas within a few hours.

At least two elevators stopped with an unknown number of people trapped inside, said a fire official in Tokyo. Some train services were halted. The number of passengers was lower than normal due to a holiday. About 800,000 residences were affected by the blackout, according to the power company. Most services have since then been restored.

Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea delayed opening by an hour as many rides did not function due to the power problems.

Teaching English In France A Novel Way To Truly Experience The Culture

By Michelle Simmons

Are you interested in a job teaching English in France? You might be surprised to learn that it’s surprisingly easy to find a position.

Unlike other countries where advanced qualifications are required, the French are more likely to hire native English-speaking teachers based on other credentials. While it’s wise to approach the job with a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate in hand, advanced degrees and credentials are not necessary. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree in almost any subject and a working knowledge of French, you’re already well on your way to a job.

You will be required to have a work visa for teaching English in France. It is possible to work part-time hours in France while traveling on a student visa, but this should not be considered as a main way of supporting yourself. If you’re serious about the career and plan to do it for any extended amount of time, it’s best to get a work visa.

Getting your visa will require finding a company that is willing to hire you and sponsor you throughout the process. While it’s possible to make a connection with a specific employer and find a position directly, you’re much better off locating an agency that can help place you. France has many resources for would-be English teachers looking for available positions.

The Cultural Service of the French Embassy provides placement for English teachers and teaching assistants. Most positions are in lower-level educational facilities or in teacher’s training colleges. You may also find a job through the French Council Exchanges. Do some online research and put the names of these organizations into search engines to learn more.

Teaching English in France is also possible at a more casual level. If you’re not interested in getting involved with a school, college, or corporation, consider teaching private lessons. Private teachers who travel to people’s homes to teach English can expect to earn about 15-20 Euros per session. You most likely won’t make a living doing this, but it can be a great way to supplement your income if you’re planning on staying in France.

A unique development in the field of teaching English in France involves teaching over the telephone. Although this method is catching on in many countries, it is particularly popular in France, and it offers teachers the opportunity to do their jobs without having to leave their home countries. Some might argue that living in France is the best part of becoming an English teacher. However, if your life doesn’t permit travel but you’re still interested in a TEFL career, telephone teaching is another option to explore.

If you’re interested in the French culture and have a working knowledge of the language, teaching English in France can be a great way to support yourself while experiencing a different culture. If you’ve chosen this field, be prepared to do your research before embarking on your adventure. It’ll take some work, but it’s very possible to make this your lifelong career.

Japan nuclear disaster: areas to remain off-limits for decades

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Japanese officials have admitted for the first time that certain radiation-stricken areas around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant may remain uninhabitable for decades. Japanese media this week reported that embattled Prime Minister Naoto Kan is to visit affected areas within days to tell residents and local officials that it will remain too dangerous to return to parts of Fukushima Prefecture in the foreseeable future.

We cannot deny the possibility that there will be some areas where it will be hard for residents to return to their homes over a long period of time.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, “We cannot deny the possibility that there will be some areas where it will be hard for residents to return to their homes over a long period of time.”

The dangers of radiation exposure in certain areas are expected to remain unacceptably high well after the plant finally undergoes a cold shutdown in the coming months. A final decision on which areas are to be declared off-limits will be made following detailed radiation monitoring and the creation of a comprehensive decontamination plan. Japanese officials have so far declined to specifically name any areas likely to be affected.

Scientists have for months warned of such an eventuality following the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima site in March. The government, criticised for its management of evacuations in the wake of the disaster, had hoped to lift current evacuation orders for most areas around the plant. However, it cannot do so amidst dangerously elevated radiation readings, including in the town of Okuma, situated about three kilometres from the Fukushima site, where cumulative radiation levels are over 25 times higher than government-mandated limits.

Media reports have also focused on uncertainty surrounding compensation for the many thousands of residents affected by the ongoing evacuations. The government may possibly purchase or rent the properties of those who cannot return to their homes and businesses.

Although the plant operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, has recently claimed radiation leaks from all three reactors have declined, concern continues to mount over the true scale of contamination. Scientists have detected widespread contamination of topsoil on agricultural land, further jeopardising the future habitability of significant areas, and uncertainty remains as to the true extent of radioactivity in numerous areas.

“Caesium-137, the main radioactive element thrown out during the various explosions, has a half-life of 30 years, and it is not going to disappear overnight,” said Didier Champion, a French nuclear safety expert.
