Obama cabinet nominees withdraw over tax issues

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

On Tuesday, United States President Barack Obama saw two of his cabinet nominations withdraw from consideration after issues with their taxes became public knowledge.

I think I screwed up.

Former Senator Tom Daschle from South Dakota withdrew after it was revealed he failed to pay US$128,203 in taxes. He has since made the payment including a $11,964 interest payment. Obama had nominated him as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Nancy Killefer, whom Obama had appointed to the newly created position of Chief Performance Officer, withdrew her nomination because she had failed to pay payroll taxes on a household employee.

“I think I screwed up,” Obama said in an interview with CNN. “And, I take responsibility for it and we’re going to make sure we fix it so it doesn’t happen again.”

Last week, Timothy F. Geithner survived his nomination and was confirmed as Secretary of the Treasury, even though it was revealed that he had failed to pay $34,000 in taxes on income earned while working for the International Monetary Fund.

When To Call A Fireplaces Repair Company

byadmin

While having a fireplace can be great, as it helps warm up the home and is a nice focal point for a room, it isn’t a totally worry-free addition to a home. From time to time, the fireplace may need repair, and it definitely needs regular maintenance. There are a few signs that it’s time to call a Fireplaces Repair Company.

Failure to Function

Of course, the most obvious sign that a fireplace needs to be repaired, and it’s time to call a Fireplaces Repair Company is if the fireplace is somehow no longer functioning or smoke is coming into the room in large amounts.

Damage to the Fireplace

Should you see that the mortar of the fireplace is crumbling, tiles are falling from the chimney or brick is starting to flake, these are all signs there’s something wrong with the fireplace that needs to be addressed by a trained professional, such as those at. Mortar is what holds the fireplace together, so if it’s failing, it could turn into a serious problem if not properly fixed.

Rust in the Firebox or White Stains on Bricks

Both of these are signs that there is moisture somewhere in the fireplace where it shouldn’t be. This moisture can damage the integrity of the fireplace and make it unsafe. The white is salt being drawn out of the brick due to moisture trapped inside somewhere, and the rust is from water, perhaps a leak, hitting the metal of the firebox.

Damage to the Chimney

Should damage be visible to the top of the chimney from outside the house, there’s a good chance that the whole chimney is weaker, and there is more damage that isn’t readily visible. It’s important to have someone come and inspect and repair the chimney before it becomes dangerous.

Stains on the Walls or Ceiling

If the walls and ceiling near the chimney are stained, this is another sign that the chimney is somehow being exposed to excessive moisture. This moisture could damage the home’s walls, floors, and ceiling as well as the chimney itself, so this is a serious issue that shouldn’t be left unattended for long.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate David Sparrow in Don Valley West

Sparrow is a candidate in Ontario’s Don Valley West riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner. The riding was set to vote in a by-election on September 22, 2008, following the resignation of John Godfrey, but Stephen Harper’s sudden election call nulled that effort.

Also running in the Toronto riding are Liberal Rob Oliphant, Conservative John Carmichael, Green Georgina Wilcock, and Communist Catherine Holliday.

The following is an interview with Sparrow, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Iranian news agency apologises for reproducing The Onion article

Monday, October 1, 2012

The Iranian Fars News Agency (FNA) yesterday apologised over an article it reproduced Friday, originally written by US satirical news website The Onion on Monday September 24. The parodic article reported “a Gallup poll” suggesting “the overwhelming majority of rural white Americans” would vote for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the President of Iran, instead of US President Barack Obama. The Onion article also said “77 percent of rural Caucasian voters” would prefer to drink beer with Ahmadinejad or attend a baseball game with him as opposed to Obama.

The FNA’s English service Editor-in-chief said the article had been “extracted” from The Onion and that FNA gives “our formal apologies for that mistake”, as well as pointing out the article was “taken down from our outlook in less two hours”.

However, the editor-in-chief also said “we do believe that if a free opinion poll is conducted in the US, a majority of Americans would prefer anyone outside the US political system to President Barack Obama and American statesmen”. He stressed that this belief does not constitute justification for the error.

[W]e do believe that if a free opinion poll is conducted in the US, a majority of Americans would prefer anyone outside the US political system to President Barack Obama and American statesmen

In The Onion’s article, fictional West Virginia resident Dale Swiderski says about Ahmadinejad: “I like him better”. ‘Swiderski’ is also quoted by the Chicago, Illinois website as saying the Iranian President “takes national defense seriously, and he’d never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does.”

In Iran, homosexuality is a criminal offence which can carry a penalty of incarceration or capital punishment. Just over five years ago, when he participated in a debate at Columbia University in New York, New York, Ahmadinejad said: “In Iran we don’t have homosexuals like in your country”.

The FNA’s error made international headlines, including in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and Australia. Will Tracy, editor of The Onion, said their website “freely shares content with Fars and commends the journalists at Iran’s Finest News Source on their superb reportage”, a humourous reference to The Onion’s slogan, ‘America’s Finest News Source’.

On the original web page on The Onion’s website, the satirical news organisation added a reference to “our Iranian subsidiary organization”, providing a link to a screenshot of the FNA’s page.

On the article page, in which The Onion was not attributed as a source, the FNA copied The Onion’s article verbatim and in its entirety, save for part of a sentence saying Ahmadinejad was “a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and has had numerous political prisoners executed”.

This is not the first time The Onion has caused the mistaken belief of their material being factual. In a November 2007 interview with Wikinews, The Onion’s Editorial Manager Chet Clem recounted an incident in which the Beijing Evening News reproduced a story from The Onion created in 2002, copied entirely verbatim, headlined “Congress threatens to leave DC unless new capitol is built”. When the error was highlighted to the Chinese newspaper, Clem said “their response was not to print a correction, but just to say that some newspapers in America make money by printing lies.” In a separate incident, Christians forwarded a story on the Internet from The Onion saying children were converting to Satanism as a result of reading the Harry Potter book series.

The FNA statement released yesterday went on to say “[a]ctive and well-known media occasionally make mistakes, and no media is an exception to this rule”, before going to provide a list of errors made by such publications as The New York Times and Beijing Evening News, as well as television broadcasters like the BBC, ITV, and CNN.

The bottom of the FNA’s statement introduces a list of notable BBC errors reported by The Daily Telegraph on December 6, 2010. While the FNA referenced The Daily Telegraph and the order of the mistakes was changed from the original article, the wording was reproduced verbatim, excluding one omitted sentence under the subheading ‘Nicky Campbell and hunting mark II’ which reads: “Campbell, who is also the presenter of the BBC’s flagship programme for Holy Week, apologised profusely for the mistake.”

According to BBC News Online, the FNA is associated with the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, an Iranian military branch.

Somali pirates hijack Indonesian tugboat and Turkish container ship

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Two more vessels have been hijacked in Somalia. Pirates have captured an Indonesian tugboat with a barge that was working for French oil firm Total and a Turkish container ship.

The Turkish vessel’s seizure was confirmed by a US Fifth Fleet spokesman. MV Bosphorus Prodigy is a 330 ft (100 m) container vessel flagged in Antigua and Barbuda. It is owned and operated by Isko Marine Company based in Istanbul.

The Fifth Fleet could not confirm the tugboat’s seizure, but an anonymous official with Total in Yemen could. He explained the boat and barge were headed to Malaysia from the Yemeni port of Mukalla. He said the crew consisted of both Indonesians and other nationalities, and that the vessels, which had been hired by a subcontractor, were not carrying any oil at the time.

The new hijackings came as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime asked for greater policing in the area by international bodies, and for the signing of agreements that allowed the arresting officer to take pirates back to the officer’s country for prosecution.

“Pirates cannot be keelhauled or forced to walk the plank, nor should they be dumped off the Somali coast,” said the office’s head Antonio Maria Costa. “They need to be brought to justice”.

More dog and cat food recalled in the United States

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Natural Balance Pet Foods has recalled some of its wet and dry food for cats and dogs after several owners said that their pets were becoming sick. The company urges owners to stop feeding their pets the food immediately.

The brands recalled include Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

Last month, Menu Foods recalled all of its 60 million products of dry and wet dog and cat food after pets began to fall ill and in some cases died of kidney failure.

“Natural Balance, Pacoima, CA, is issuing a voluntary nationwide recall for all of its Venison dog products and the dry Venison cat food only, regardless of date codes. The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine,” said a press released issued by Natural Balance.

The FDA states that the “investigation remains open and active, and the agency continues to follow leads to get closer to the root cause of the problem and to ensure that all contaminated product is removed from the market.”

“The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination,” said the press release.

Bags, cans and zip lock bags of the food are expected to be the most affected.

“The products are packaged in bags, cans and zip lock treat bags and sold in pet specialty stores and PetCo nationally. No other Natural Balance products are involved in this voluntary recall as none of our other formulas include the rice protein concentrate,” added the press release.

The company states that the food, Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food, are the only brands affected by the recall.

A Borrower\’s Perspective on Car Loans in India

by

Pritam Bhalgat

One of the greatest joys of present day India happens to be the sheer range of vehicles available for sale. From the cheapest car in the world (proudly made by a home grown manufacturer) to some of the most exotic of wheels to ever be produced on the face of the planet, they are all available here.

But there s more to this automobile rainbow than just that and irrespective of one s cravings being worth a few lakhs to a few hundred lakhs, the car loan finance sector is helping many a fellow countryman (and woman) to live their dream. But no two offerings are the same and just like the automobiles themselves, there are a large number of service providers offering to help prospective buyers.

 • The usage of EMI (Equated Monthly Installments) may have hit an all-time high in recent years but a recent trick that s been unearthed by a few alert buyers could turn things on their head. Financers generally tend to go by the on-road pricing of a vehicle when processing applications for car loans. Now, the on-road price is computed by taking the ex-showroom cost and then adding on the various taxes and levies. However, a few unscrupulous dealers have resorted to jacking up the ex-showroom cost since the higher this is, the higher the loan amount would be sanctioned, thereby benefiting them in the end.
 • This is why; it is not only important to fall for the attractive car loan rates being offered by the lender but also to pay closer attention to the finer aspects in-order to bagging the best deal out there. Comparing quotes is a no-brainer here, considering just how tough the competition is. This has led to it turning into a borrower s market of sorts and people simply must know where to ask and how.
 • Irrespective of the amount being financed, the owner to be is still expected to fork out a certain amount in down payment. Now remember the earlier ex-showroom cost being variable, well, the down payment too is linked to it. Consequently, if one must get away with paying a lower amount, then they must watch the dealer mark-ups closely.
 • If one has a pre-existing home loan or a business related loan from a particular lender, then it might be worth the time to ring them up and check if they would be willing to bank-roll your automobile dream as well. Chances are, if such a deal can be worked out, it would turn out to be on considerably favorable terms. This is because lenders usually have to pay for acquisition costs or the charges for each lead generated; which, in the case of pre-existing customers is negligible.

Come what may though, there is no escaping the fact that details are where the gremlins could be lying in wait. So no matter how enticing those lending rates or the friendliness of the man at the vendor s gates, please do go through everything with a level headed mind. In the end it is a dream that is being brought to life and special moments such as these, are best left unspoilt by people of dubious means.

Pritam is a young professional working for an upcoming automobile dealership. He shall be heading the team at the

car loans

division and comes with years of experience garnered from working with some of the top lending institutions in the country.
