The Little Known Problem With Low Fat Diets

By Mike Warner

It is absolutely impossible to escape the hysteria going on in the supermarket aisles around the country today. The low fat craze is everywhere. Think of a food, and there is sure to be a low fat version of it. Some of them seem absolutely unbelievable to any fair minded person. I mean think about it. Low fat ice cream! Do you believe it is true? Well I’m going to reveal to you today that even though foods like this are low fat technically, they really aren’t in reality. You’re going to learn that you have to see what happens inside of your body when your body digests your food to determine how fattening the food really is.

Before I expand on this, you should first know what the original low fat diet is all about, and how this has shaped food manufacturing in this country.

This diet gets you to eat low fat foods to lose weight. The idea is simple, eat low fat food, and you don’t put on any fat. As you are going to find out, your body is far more complicated than that, and just because a food doesn’t have fat to start off with, it doesn’t mean that it won’t end up being fat by the time it is totally processed inside of you.

The low fat diet has gained a lot of traction over the last two decades. So , the food manufacturers had to act, or lose their market share. That’s why we have a low fat version of everything when you go to the supermarket. The only problem is that many of these food companies replace the fat in the foods with a huge amount of sugars and other refined carbohydrates to maintain the taste of that food.

Therefore, if you are following a low fat diet, you are probably eating a lot of refined carbohydrates.

So, what does that mean?

Refined carbohydrates get processed as soon as you start eating it, and breaks down into glucose (a potent source of energy for your body) so that it can actually be used by your body. The way your body does this is by dumping the glucose into your blood stream. Now you blood picks up the glucose and transports it to all areas of your body. That way you never run out of energy.

Well what if you don’t need this energy right now?

Your body stores this excess glucose as glycogen in your muscles. If all of your glycogen stores are already full, then it is stored as fat!

I hope you understood that. Let me rephrase it ensure you get it.

If you eat a lot of refined carbohydrates, it will eventually turn to fat if you eat more than you need. Unless you are very active, and make use of your glycogen stores, you don’t need refined carbohydrates. Even then, you might only use them straight after a workout.

So although you may be eating what’s called a ‘low fat’ food, it is really anything but low fat.

Now the main exception to this is low fat milk, low fat cheese or low fat natural yogurt. These usually don’t have refined sugar. Most of the other types of ‘low fat’ foods though are full of it.

The worst thing about these refined carbohydrates are that they are very addictive. If you study how insulin works in your body, you’ll realize that your body starts craving for these high sugar foods, often when you aren’t even hungry. It’s a vicious cycle you want to stay away from. It’s a cycle that most obese and overweight people are right in the middle of. There are also other effects of eating too many refined carbs. These include unstable energy levels, mood swings, headaches and onset of life threatening diseases such as heart disease.

This all explains why there are so many people that buy low fat food religiously, but still don’t manage to drop any weight. They blame themselves, their genetics, when its not really their fault. They were just not taught how their own body works. If you have had this experience then you now know why.

The bottom line is that what you eat is as, if not more important as how much you eat.

So next time you go shopping and you see the ‘Low Fat’ sign on the food, make sure you check the ingredients label to see how much sugar and carbs are in it. Now you know that excess refined carbs are pretty much the same thing as fat, you’ll be able to see right through the sneaky companies that try and trick you with this.

High Tech Public Relations Firms Use Social Media To Keep An Eye On What People Are Thinking

High tech public relations firms use social media to keep an eye on what people are thinking

by

Kevin Waddel

In recent years, social media outlets have revolutionized how people interact with one another. In the past, people would actually have to meet face to face to hear the latest gossip or share information. People would gather to pass along recent developments and to enjoy one another’s company. However, in recent years, individuals have been able to interact with one another instantly via their favorite social media website. They can instantly comment on one another’s photos, engage in some light hearted ribbing, make new friends, and reconnect with old classmates online. Social media has truly revolutionized how individuals from all different types of economic backgrounds chat and cultivate relationships of all kinds.

It should come as no surprise then that corporations and other assorted interests have tried to use social media as part of an advertising and marketing plan. Millions of unique visitors use social media on a daily basis and thus, corporations and marketing agencies, as well as high public relations firms try to use the vast network of users to advance their own particular agendas. This is incredibly helpfully for high tech public relations firms as well as other types of marketing and advertising firms to try and capitalize on how people use social media networks and popular websites in order to try and drive up interest in their firms and hopefully will drive up business. This way, these corporations can try and influence people and try to control how they think about that particular company’s goods and services. The technological industry has been more prone than others to use social media in order to try and protect their reputations. In service of this end, many high tech companies have started to use the services of a licensed high tech public relations firm that has the experience and expertise to mold their reputation so that more people are willing to put their faith in that company. The main reason why so many high tech companies employ a high tech public relations firm is so that they can help the companies increase their total revenue because people from all economic backgrounds are struggling, and therefore want to be sure that when they make a significant purchase they are getting their money’s worth. This is precisely where high tech public relations firms come in. They have to do everything in their power to prevent scandal for their clients and to advocate strongly on their clients’ behalf by overselling all the potential good their clients can do for their respective communities. In this way high tech public relations firms can help to increase the amount of customers that are willing to stay with their clients for the long term, and this is a highly prized and all together too rare a commodity in this day and age. Social media allows high tech public relations firms the flexibility to watch how their efforts are being received in real time, allowing them the opportunity to change their message should it be decided that they would be able to get a better return on the investment of their time, effort, and energies if they altered their approach, even if it’s a slight change. High tech public relations need this type of flexibility because it is absolutely necessary in the high tech world to stay on top of ever new development and to stay aware of any new trend in public thought that might adversely affect their clients or their own reputations. Deadly illegal sexual enhancement products appear on the Singaporean market

Friday, April 11, 2008

New ‘deadly’ sexual enhancement products have been found in Singaporean markets and can cause serious side effects on users.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced the presence of the illegal drugs, known as Power 1 Walnut, Santi bovine penis erecting capsule, Zhong Hua Niu Bian and fake Cialis, which have been discovered over the past 3 months. Santi bovine penis erecting capsule has been found to contain high amounts of glibenclamide, a potent drug used to treat diabetes. The tablets also contain sildenafil and tadalafil – potent western medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction. Zhong Hua Niu Bian also contains sildenafil and glibenclamide.

High consumption of the tablets can be potentially deadly as the glibenclamide in the capsules can lead to drastically reduced blood sugar levels which can lead to seizures, stroke, coma or death. Consuming half of a Power 1 Walnut capsule has led to unconsciousness and frothing at the mouth.

Consumption of Power 1 Walnut has led to the death of a middle age man last week who fell into a coma. Currently, one death and two cases of coma have been reported from the total of 89 hospitalised cases linked with the consumption of the illegal drugs. It has been revealed that patients obtained the drugs by purchasing them from illegal peddlers located in various parts of Singapore.

The HSA has advised people to stop consuming the drugs and to report on any cases of consumption to them.

5. Selection of heat transfer models and fouling coefficients for shell side and tube side.

Software Design for Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers:

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers having lot software design and rating range values available including AspenBJAC, HTFS and CC-THERM, which insist the designer to make up the effects of many other attracting design and achieve optimum thermal design. These design packages are supported by extensive component physical property databases and thermodynamic models.

It must be stressed that software convergence and optimisation routines will not necessarily achieve a practical and economic design without the designer forcing parameters in an intuitive way.

It is recommended that the design be checked by running the model in the rating mode. It is the intention of this paper to provide the basic information and fundamentals in a concise format to achieve this objective.

The paper is structured on Chemstations CC-THERM software which enables design and rating to be carried out within a total process model using CHEMCAD steady state modelling software.

Study claims to show difference between male and female brains

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Michael Gurian, psychologist and author of “What Could He Be Thinking?“, has claimed to identify approximately one hundred structural differences between male and female brains in a recent study. Gurian comments:

Men, because we tend to compartmentalize our communication into a smaller part of the brain, we tend to be better at getting right to the issue, the more female brain (will) gather a lot of material, gather a lot of information, feel a lot, hear a lot, sense a lot.

One major structural difference that Gurian has made clear is that males generally have more activity in the mechanical centers of the brain, while women have more activity in centers of the brain dedicated to verbal communication and emotion. A clear example of this is the hypothetical situation of giving a child a toy. He explains it as such:

That doll becomes life-like to that girl, but you give it to a two-year-old boy and you are more likely, not all the time, but you are more likely than not to see that boy try to take the head off the doll. He thinks spatial-mechanical. He’s using the doll as an object.

Another expert, Dr. Marianne Legato, says it all boils down to genetics, noting that the Y chromosome (which only males carry) has “at least 21 unique genes unique to males which control many of the body’s operations down to the level of the cells.”

Gurian agrees that culture is significant in brain development, but argues that biology plays an equally important role. He makes a point of how the MRI scans show that the female corpus callosum, the center of the brain which regulates communication between the brain’s hemispheres, is larger than the male’s. On the other hand, the scans also show that information flows more freely between the hemispheres of the male brain.

The exact role that brain structure plays in behavior, however, has been an area of considerable contention in science for literally hundreds of years. Early studies in craniometry conducted by Paul Pierre Broca were used to attempt to distinguish differences between human races, though have now been dismissed as scientific racism. The nature-nurture debate has raged for centuries in a variety of forms, without yet any clear resolution as to the role in which innate biological tendencies interact with environmental conditions or willed behavior. As such, studies relating to brain structure and claims to innate behavior often generate substantial controversy.

MIT anthropologist of science Joseph Dumit’s study of brain imaging in his book Picturing Personhood: Brain Scans and Biomedical Identity, noted that the apparent “transparency” of such pictures (the appearance that they can be easily interpreted by laymen, when they are often the source of ambiguity and dispute by even highly-trained neurosurgeons) has led to their proliferation as indicators of objective truth in media and in courts of law, and that such conclusions are often knowingly exaggerated by the specialists creating the images for better visual effect.

The timing of Gurian’s book comes on the heels of another controversy over gender differences sparked by comments made by Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who blamed low numbers of women in the sciences on genetic differences. Summers has been criticized by a large number of academics and scientists, as well as by many news publications, in the wake of what he was reported as saying during a conference on January 14.

Red Hat to move focus away from CentOS in favour of Stream; CentOS team discuss implications with Wikinews

Monday, December 14, 2020

On Tuesday, US-based software company Red Hat announced their plans to shift their focus away from CentOS in favour of CentOS Stream.

In the blog post Chris Wright, the Chief Technological Officer of Red Hat said Red Hat had informed the CentOS governing board that Red Hat was “shifting our investment fully from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream”. At least five of the nine CentOS Governing Board listed on the project are Red Hat employees.

Started in 2004, CentOS has been a free-of-cost free/libre open source software which provided binary-code compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) — Red Hat’s GNU General Public Licensed paid operating system. CentOS was absorbed into Red Hat in 2014, with Red Hat gaining the trademark rights of “CentOS”.

Red Hat also sponsors the Fedora operating system. Red Hat even gives the software engineering interns laptops with Fedora on it. Till now, software development took place on Fedora, which was later adopted in RHEL, which the Red Hat maintained and provided support for, for those customers who had RHEL subscription. CentOS would then follow RHEL to provide the same features free of cost, but without the support.

Stream was announced in September 2019, just two months after Red Hat was acquired by IBM. CentOS Stream’s development cycle had new features added to it before the features became a part of RHEL. Stream receives more frequent updates, however, it does not follow RHEL’s release cycle.

With CentOS Stream, developments from the community and the Red Hat emplyees would take place beforehand on both Fedora, and Stream as a rolling release, before those features are absorbed into RHEL. CentOS followed the release cycle of RHEL and therefore it was a stable distribution. Features available in CentOS were tried and tested by Fedora, and then RHEL maintainers. Stream, on the other hand, has features added to it before those features become a part of RHEL. That implies Stream would be ahead of RHEL’s development, containing new features which are not yet tried and tested by RHEL developers, and not be binary code-compatible with RHEL.

Writing “The future of CentOS Linux is CentOS Stream”, Wright further wrote in the announcement, CentOS Stream “provides a platform for rapid innovation at the community level but with a stable enough base to understand production dynamics.” Wright also said, “CentOS Stream isn’t a replacement for CentOS Linux; rather, it’s a natural, inevitable next step intended to fulfill the project’s goal of furthering enterprise Linux innovation.”

Since the announcement was made, many people expressed their anger on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Reddit and CentOS project’s mailing list. CentOS 8’s End of Life (EOL) has been moved up from May 2029 to December 31, 2021, while CentOS 7 is expected to receive maintenance updates through June 2024, outliving CentOS 8.

Gregory Kurtzer, who had started the CentOS project, announced a new operating system, Rocky Linux. Rocky Linux describes itself as “a community enterprise Operating System designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Enterprise Linux”. The project said “Rocky Linux aims to function as a downstream build as CentOS had done previously, building releases after they have been added to the upstream vendor, not before.” The project maintainers have not decided a date for when the operating system will be released.

Kurtzer explained the reason to call the OS as Rocky Linux: “Thinking back to early CentOS days… My cofounder was Rocky McGaugh. He is no longer with us, so as a H/T [hat tip] to him, who never got to see the success that CentOS came to be, I introduce to you…Rocky Linux”.

Wikinews reached out to the members of the CentOS project, Pablo Greco and Rich Bowen, to discuss this move, its implications as well as the future of CentOS. Greco is a maintainer of armhfp (32-bit processors) and is a part of the CentOS’ quality assurance team. Bowen — who unlike Greco, works for Red Hat — is the community manager of the CentOS project.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.
