Forget driving to the Olympics, says Beijing

Friday, September 22, 2006

Anyone planning on attending the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China can forget about renting a car when they get there.

Newspapers reported on September 18 that no private cars would be allowed near any of the venues in the host city, in an attempt to combat the gridlock that has plagued the city.

Known for its stand-still traffic, Beijing’s transport authority believes it needs to curb at least 20% of traffic flow to ensure the Games run smoothly. The number of cars in the city is set to increase from 2.7 million to 3 million by the time of the Olympics. Country-wide, annual car sales are expected to reach 10 million annually by 2010.

A good infrastructure is one of the International Olympic Committee’s top priorities when searching for bid cities. The IOC requires that athletes, support staff such as coaches, venue volunteers, spectators, and the press all should be able to get from venue to venue without hassle.

Existing plans in Beijing say that private cars may only drive in the city on alternate days. Plates with odd numbers would drive one day, while even numbered licenses would drive the next day.

Wired magazine has suggested fuel-cell vehicles may be China’s next cultural revolution. Vancouver-based venture capitalist Mike Brown told the National Post: “If they get aggressive about this, and they decided to build up a fuel cell manufacturing capability to sell half a million of these things, they’ll get the costs down faster than anybody else.”

Cat Trees That Look Like Real Trees

Submitted by: Benz M

Cat owners know the intense joy having a cat companion can bring, but also the many problematic behaviors indoor cats can exhibit. Cats have the natural instincts to scratch, climb and sit up high in order to survey their surroundings. These instincts served the domestic cats ancestors well as wild animals in the outdoors. Cats prefer to perch up high in order to survey their surroundings in order to watch for predators and other threats to themselves and their young. A cat s natural urge to scratch allows for them to mark their territory. When a cat scratched, they use the scent glands in their paws to release their pheromones onto the object.

When the domestic house cat exhibits these characteristics, it can cause much stress for cat owners. These cat instincts often result in destruction as well. Scratched furniture, shredded carpets and curtains and broken valuables from jumping and climbing are common in households with cats. Cats need an area of their own to scratch, nap, climb and jump upon.

Cat trees that look like real trees offer this stimulating and comfortable area for a cat and peace of mind for their owner.

Cat trees that look like real trees not only curb undesirable cat behaviors, but also help your cat stay healthy. Cat trees that look like real trees encourage your cat to do all the jumping, scratching, stretching and climbing they desire. This frequent exercise prevents a cat from becoming overweight. It also aids in keeping their joints flexible, which is especially important for aging cats. Allowing your cat to engage in this important exercise will keep your cat lively, young and playful for years to come.

Many cat trees that look like real trees contain safe synthetic leaves for your cat to chew on, saving your fresh flowers and indoor plants. Many also offer sisal rope or natural bark for your cat to enjoy scratching with no destruction to your home. Many cat trees that look like real trees are personally designed for each customer and serve as unique home decorations. Instead of carpeted wood boxes and poles in the corner of the room, a cat owner can display a forest-like oasis that doubles as both a quality home furnishing and a fun and adventurous place for kitty.

One of the bad parts about cat trees is that they are often hard to find and purchase. Although a number of major retail stores offer cat trees, it is hard to find cat trees that look like real trees. Luckily there are a number of sites that custom make them at a resonabile price. Now, any pet lover can get special cat trees that match their unique personality. It is obvious that any cat lover will want to get a cat tree for their cat. Therefore, it is best to get a custom, or unique cat tree that shows that you are not only a caring owner, but a creative one as well. Now, if you are looking to find cat trees that look like real trees, it is easier than ever to find what you are looking for!

Google planning PayPal rival

Monday, June 20, 2005

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google

Financial analysts say Google is planning an e-wallet service that could eventually compete with eBay’s payment service PayPal. Google has not confirmed the development.

The rumor is a first sign of Google’s expected expansion of revenue sources to capitalize on its advertising customer base and search-engine traffic. What form that expansion will take has been a hotly debated subject for the company whose stock valuation momentarily made it the world’s biggest media company on June 7, 2005. Even Microsoft has been mentioned as a possible future competitor.

Ebay’s stock valuation dipped more than 2% on the news. Paypal currently accounts for one-fifth of the company’s revenues. But one business analyst saw potential benefit for Paypal[1], depending on exactly how the “Google Wallet” takes shape. The uncertainty underlined the lack of substantive information behind the rumor.

According to the New York Times, the CEO of a major online merchant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, was approached by Google to take part in this service. Steve Langdon, a Google spokesperson, declined to comment.

Lemon Law Case Assistance How To Fight And Win

By Scott Hallman

Some consumers make the assumption that handling their Lemon Law claim themselves saves them money. Before you decide to “go it alone”, here are three things that are important to know.

1. Lemon Law Claims are complicated and you will waste much of your time and create unnecessary headaches for yourself.

Trying to research your rights and write threatening letters will usually cause you more frustration than it’s worth. Further, if you fail on your own, you will have wasted precious time. Or worse, what if you accept an offer and sign a release which you will regret later (including losing your Legal rights).

2. Consumers have virtually no negotiating power with the manufacturer. They can’t cause the economic pain and publicity that a lawsuit can for the Manufacturer.

Knowing the state and federal Lemon Laws does not mean that you will be treated with respect. The car companies still play games, much like insurance companies. If you represent yourself, the manufacturer will likely drag out the case in hopes that you will either go away or take little or nothing to settle. When you hire an experienced attorney, there are no games. Cases get resolved quickly and the compensation you receive is fair.

3. Consumers get less money!

For the above reasons, attorney negotiated settlements are normally substantially higher than one’s negotiated by consumer’s alone. Chances are your recovery will be worth substantially less if you represent yourself (and you will have done all the work). Some consumers have been known to accept a month’s payment, when they are really entitled to all their money back! If you select a law office that has substantial Lemon Law experience, the manufacturer will already know your Law Firm and what the expected compensation will need to be to settle the claim.

British singer George Michael, 53, dies

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

George Michael, a well-known British pop singer and songwriter, died on Christmas Day at the age of 53. Michael was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire, England, by boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.

I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.

Michael’s publicist released the following statement to People and Entertainment Weekly: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time.” He also reported that Michael had died of heart failure and “passed away peacefully”.

Sir Elton John said via Instagram, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London. Over his multi-decade career, he sold more than 100 million records. Along with co-singer Andrew Ridgeley he became famous as part of the duo band Wham!. Together, Michael and Ridgeley produced several hit songs, such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, and Last Christmas. In 1985, Wham! was the first Western band to play in China since the beginning of the country’s opening up strategy. Wham! dissolved in 1986. In 1984, Michael recorded the successful single Careless Whisper. Michael was credited as the solo artist in the United Kingdom and as “Wham! featuring George Michael” in the United States. Michael released a hit solo album Faith in 1987, containing hits like I Want Your Sex.

Michael’s life was troubled by both substance abuse and issues with his sexuality. He initially hid his identity as a gay man from his fans, coming out only after a very public arrest for public lewdness in 1998. He would later be arrested for possession of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison in 2010 for crashing a Range Rover into a storefront while under the influence of drugs and possession of cannabis.

Michael had a history of transforming his negative experiences into art. He wrote White Light about a serious case of pneumonia that led to his hospitalization in 2011, and the music video for Outside, which followed on the heels of his arrest and coming out, showed scenes of a men’s bathroom, a dance club, and men kissing while in police uniforms. He would perform White Light live at the 2012 London Olympics.

We clean all types of Carpets, Rugs, Runners and Mats.If you are like me, your oven occasionally (or once a week in my case) gets burnt on food on the bottom, splattered food on the sides, or dried food stuck on the rack.I do not have a self-cleaning oven as some do, so I had to find a way to solve this problem. (As a side note, I’ve read a lot of cases of self-cleaning ovens experiencing problems after using the self-cleaning cycle as some sources suggest that they high heat may cause fuses or elements to burn out more quickly. There are also some concerns about substances released into the air from the high heat of the self cleaningcycle.)I also checked our specific oven cleaning products at the store, and definitely did not want those ingredients in my oven around the food I was cooking for my family. I tried a variety of natural treatments before stumbling on the best oven cleaner, natural or not, that I have ever found: baking soda!Baking Soda Natural Oven CleaningThough it seems like a simple fix, baking soda is really effective and makes the daunting task of oven cleaning a little easier. All I have to do to get a shining oven is spray the whole oven down with a water bottle so that it is damp, and pour on a thick layer or baking soda, especially on the bottom, until there is about 1/4 inch layer of baking soda paste on the bottom. If any of the baking soda is still dry, I mist it with the water bottle. Then, I walk away, and leave the baking soda there for a few hours (with the oven off, unless you want to see some amateur special effects… I don’t recommend this!) After a few hours I simply wipe up the paste with a cloth and all the grime comes with it. For really baked on grime, this may take a couple applications, but it always works and it is 100% natural!Oven cleaning Kent

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Ingrid Newkirk (with Little Man):I want to more closely associate humans with the other animals, because if we took Biology 101 we know we are all animals. It’s just that we decide we’re gods, they’re trash. That’s just invalid, wrong from every point of perspective: scientific, moral and everything else. I want people to relate to the other animals.“Image: David Shankbone.

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.
