Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

New method of displaying time patented

Saturday, October 14, 2006

An American inventor has patented a pair of new time formats with a footprint less than 50% of that of conventional four-digit time. The more unusual of the two new formats, called “TWELV”, dispenses with numerals altogether. In place of clock hands or digits, the new clock uses color to convey the hour and a moon image to convey the minute, which moon slowly grows throughout the course of an hour from a narrow crescent to a full-fledged circle.

The second and more approachable of the new formats retains numerical digits to indicate the minute but uses colors to convey the hour.

Early critics question whether the aesthetic benefits of the moon-clock will be sufficient to encourage users to learn the color-based time-telling system. However, the size advantages of the new system may make it particularly suitable for mobile applications, particularly cell phones, wearable computers, and head-mounted displays.

Do Clip On Earrings Come In Different Sizes?

Do Clip On Earrings Come In Different Sizes?

by

Vincent A Rogers

Some might not know this, but clip on earrings are still in high demand. There was a time when women purchased lots of clip-on earrings, because getting one’s ears pierced was considered a big deal. Nowadays, most women have their ears pierced from the time that they are babies. Still, there are lots of women who have never had their ears pierced. These women don’t want to miss out on the fun of wearing their favourite styles of earrings. Wearing earrings is fun, feminine, and they can help to accentuate just the right look for any type of occasion.

When most people think of clip on earrings, they think of large and ornate styles of earrings, such as costume jewellery earrings. While these are the most popular style of clip-on earrings, many women will be pleased to know that they can wear clip-ons in all sorts of sizes and styles. For example, there are small-sized clip-ons that would be appropriate to wear in professional settings. Earring clips such as pearl, small drops, or gemstone studs can be worn with suits and dresses, in the same way that a woman would wear pierced versions of the same styles.

A woman can also wear clipped earring styles such as dangles and drops. Many might believe that they can only wear these types of earrings if their ears are pierced but due to popular demand, there are many who have virgin earlobes, yet wear drops and dangles. Modern manufacturing has allowed for styles such as these to be converted from pierced backings to clip backings. As a matter of fact, there are some jewellery outlets that allow for customers to purchase earring converters. These converters can change a pierced style of earring into a clipped style. One would simply insert the pierced backing into the clipped converter. Then, the customer would clip their favourite style of earring onto their earlobes.

Finally, women love wearing sparkling costume jewellery. Costume jewellery is literally where clipped earrings can shine. Women can very easily find medium-sized to large-sized clipped styles to wear to parties, events, or simply for a night out on the town. However, a woman must be certain that she purchases an earring size that won’t hurt her ears. Larger earrings are glued or fused to backings that clamp down especially tight, in order to keep larger earrings on the earlobe. Therefore, it’s quite painful to wear a clipped earring that causes the earlobe to hang unnaturally.

No matter where a woman needs to go, or what event she needs to attend, she can be certain that she will find a clipped style that is just right for her ensemble.

1000 homes evacuated in Plymouth, England, after bomb find

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

The discovery of an old World War II bomb in a construction site has caused at least 1000 residents in Plymouth located in South-West England, to be evacuated.

“Evacuations are being carried out of properties within 100m [328ft] of the scene. Properties within the 100m-300m [328-984ft] zone are being advised to open windows and draw curtains,” said a spokesman for the police department in Plymouth.

Workers on the site discovered the bomb at about 10:30 a.m. local time in Plymouth, England on Brentor Road.

Reports say that the bomb is sticking out of the ground by about 6 inches, and weighed an estimated 113 kilograms, or 250 pounds, but could have weighed as much as 500 pounds.

“The item was protruding about six inches from the ground and was described as being up to 10-inches in diameter,” said a spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall Police.

The Army bomb disposal team from Wales is currently trying to figure out what to do with the bomb and it could take several hours before authorities can dispose of it. Reports say that the bomb will be taken to the ocean to be detonated.

“The precise nature of this operation and any potential route are yet to be confirmed,” added the spokesman.

Generating Solar Power Electricity

Submitted by: Y.T. Lee

There are many ways of generating electricity for your home and solar power electricity is one of them. Those who do not know about it might not believe that it is possible to harness the rays of the run to generate current. Ask people about generation of electric power and most of them will answer that electricity is generated by a power plant. For such people electricity generation means a huge plant situated on the outskirts of the town and having tall, smoke emitting chimneys. You should know that apart from generating power using traditional fuel, there are many other means available for generating electricity. There are the hydroelectric plants that generate electricity by harnessing the power of water.

These plants can only run in places where there is a steady flow of a good volume of water, like mountains, where the ice melts and flows down at a high speed. Then there are plants that generate electricity using the flow of air. These plants again will run in areas where there are sufficient gusts of wind throughout the year. Most people should know about the nuclear power plants that generate electricity by harnessing the power of the atom. These plants cost a lot to build and their maintenance charges as well as the cost of their fuel is exorbitant. The sun shines everywhere, in the mountains, hills and plains and is available throughout the year in most places.

Solar cells harness the power of sunlight and convert it into electric power that can be used to run the electrical appliances of your home. Since sunshine is free, it does not cost the end users any money to use it as the raw material. The only investment such people have to make lies in the humble solar cell array, and they are available cheaply. Check the Internet and you will find many sites that offer solar cell kits for low prices. There are some sites that offer these kits for free and it is recommended that you avoid them. Before purchasing any such kit that converts the power of the sun into electricity, it is essential that you determine how much power you will be requiring.

The size of the kit depends on this. If required, take the help of any electrician to find out the amount of power the basic appliances in your home needs. Once this is done with, add 10% to that figure, in case you wish to add any electrical gadget in the future. Armed with this figure check out and purchase a suitable kit. All kits contain a comprehensive and illustrated manual that shows you how to assemble the panel step by step. A basic knowledge of soldering is required, since you will have to solder each individual solar module to another in order to complete the panel. Once the panel is completed and mounted on a suitable location that receives adequate sunshine, you can start generating solar power electricity for your residential needs.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Scottish Justice Secretary ‘acutely aware of unusual publicity’ in Kular case

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Wikinews has obtained a letter by Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to former Conservative justice spokesman John Lamont in response to questions raised by our correspondent about the Mikaeel Kular murder case. Wikinews has investigated possible contempt by media publishing potentially prejudicial material, and MacAskill wrote he has “been following the case of Mikaeel Kular and [is] acutely aware of the unusual publicity this case has attracted.”

When Mikaeel Kular, three, vanished from his Edinburgh home last month police and volunteers scoured the capital for him. His body was found in Fife just before midnight on January 17, and his mother was arrested on January 18. That’s when Wikinews first reported on possible widespread contempt by UK and Scottish media.

Our correspondent is based in Scotland and has been advised by a lawyer not to identify anybody detained until they have appeared in court, even if they have been arrested and charged. Professor James Chalmers of the University of Glasgow has since reviewed our coverage and confirmed this position. Despite that a large number of major media outlets identified Rosdeep Adekoya, nee Kular, 33, as the arrested individual.

Adekoya has since been in Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with murdering her son. She is in custody pending indictment and trial, but any eyewitness evidence may be tainted because her image has been widely published. This is common practice elsewhere in the UK but Scottish justice works differently and courts have viewed publication of photos as potentially prejudicial. Professor Pamela Ferguson of the University of Dundee notes “journalists do seem to be walking a dangerous line if publishing photos etc of suspects.” Crown Office, which is in overall charge of prosecutions, has indicated to journalists that no further comment will be made at least until indictment.

MacAskill however expressed confidence in the Scottish court system to deal with the situation. “I am confident… the courts themselves will intervene if they believe publicity is in danger of being prejudicial.” He also wrote to Lamont that he has faith in the court to successfully direct any jury that may try the case in order to maintain fairness.

The courts have said that the only safe route to avoid committing a contempt is to avoid publishing a photograph

The Contempt of Court Act 1981 is designed to prevent prejudicial material going in front of juries before trial. Although UK-wide legislation, the law is interpreted differently north of the border than in England and Wales. Witnesses in Scotland may be asked to identify accused persons standing in the dock. The BBC College of Journalism advises legal advice be sought ahead of publishing photos and notes it has previously been ruled contempt. The BBC used the accused’s photo prominently in their own online coverage.

Chalmers explains: “It may be a contempt of court to create a substantial risk of serious prejudice to someone’s right to a fair trial. A photograph might do this in a case where identification is an issue; on the face of it, that does not seem especially likely in this case, but it is impossible to know for certain at this point. The courts have said that the only safe route to avoid committing a contempt is to avoid publishing a photograph, but that does not mean that publishing a photograph is automatically a contempt.” MacAskill noted “the kind of issue that publicity might raise may become apparent only during the trial itself.”

Contempt has been a considerable issue in the UK in recent years after high-profile cases. In one instance a charge against serial killer Levi Bellfield was dropped owing to publicity while the jury were deliberating; in another, newspapers were fined and sued for libel over reporting on the arrest of a suspect who turned out to be innocent in a prominent investigation.

A proposal was mooted to ban identification of suspects arrested anywhere in the UK, but this was subsequently shelved. MacAskill confirmed “the Scottish Government is content with the way the courts are operating the rules on contempt of court in Scotland at the moment and has no plans to make changes.” He also wrote of the difficulties with trying to individually cover all eventualities with prescriptive legislation, saying “A trial for a sexual offence will raise very different issues — particularly of protecting victims — from those that are raised by a tax fraud trial.”

MacAskill says it is the Scottish Government’s position that the task of “counterbalancing the public interest in reporting with upholding the criminal law should be left to those whose job it is to do so — the courts and the judiciary, acting in the individual circumstances of the case”.

How To Stop Aggression In Your Dog

Submitted by: Michael Marsden

Dogs are integrally aggressive beings and are actually capable of causing serious harm both to dogs and humans alike. Being that aggressive is quite understandable because wild dogs need to defend themselves from other creatures, defend their territory, food and mate. They also need to hunt in order to survive. Over time, dogs have been tamed and have even been proclaimed as man s best friend. But some dogs may become more dangerous and aggressive if they lack behaviour training. In order to keep you and your family safe, take steps to stop dog aggression.

The two main types of aggression in dogs are aggressiveness towards strangers or even family members as well. They primarily become like that because of fear, nervousness or even insecurity. These dogs bark, bite and snap when they are at that particular state. These dogs also become a lot more protective or possessive of their property. This certain property can possibly be a family member, your house, its toy or food. Dogs that are this protective can even prevent your home from being robbed.

There are dogs which are aggressive because of they possess a dominant personality. If a dog has that trait, it will feel that it is the dominant one in that particular area. This is not really that common to dogs but statistics have shown that this kind of aggressive behaviour applies only to specific breeds of dogs.

As a dog owner, you should have a lot of resources to aid in controlling your dog s aggression problem. Here are 6 steps you can take in order to stop dog aggression:

1. The initial step you must take is to check with your dog s vet to rule out any kind of medical cause of your dog s aggressive behaviour. 2. Consult a professional dog trainer for help. This kind of problem will not just disappear by itself. In order to work with aggression problems, you will need some home help from an animal behaviour specialist. 3. Ensure the safety of everyone. This must be your priority. Confine and supervise the activities of your dog until the time you get professional help. You are liable for the behaviour of your dog. If you have to take your dog for a walk, use a cage-type of muzzle as a precaution for the meantime. 4. Keep your dog away from the situations you have observed in which it shows aggression. If possible, when that situation comes, confine your dog to a safe room. This limits the contact with other people. 5. If your dog is protective of its food, treats, or even a particular place, do not allow it to access those things. In case of an emergency situation, bribe your dog with something that it thinks is better. 6. Neuter or spray your dog. Dogs that are intact are most likely to show dominance, protective aggressive or territorial behaviour.

If you think you have tried everything you can but your dog is still hard to control, consult your dog s vet. Keep in mind that all dogs out there can be controlled in some way. You just have to come across the perfect training program designed for your problem.
